Scope of Job:

 

The Department of Civil Engineering (CIVE) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applicants for one or more faculty positions as part of a college wide cluster hire in the broad area of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and intelligent engineering systems with applications in structural condition monitoring and damage detection of civil infrastructures using smart and power-efficient sensing systems with emphasis on unmanned aerial vehicles, structural dynamics and control, and resiliency and sustainability of civil infrastructures under extreme loading conditions. Successful candidates will contribute to one or more of the following centers or upcoming doctoral programs in the College of Engineering & Computer Science: the Center for Multidisciplinary Research Excellence in Cyber-Physical Infrastructure Systems (MECIS), the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS), the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Cyber Systems (CAMICS), the Center for Nanotechnology, the proposed high performance computing cluster, an interdisciplinary PhD program in materials science and engineering, or a PhD program in computer science with interdisciplinary applications.The positions are for tenure track assistant professors; however, exceptional candidates may be considered for credit toward time on tenure track or for appointment as associate professor.The CIVE Department at UTRGV accepts applications for Fall 2023 semester to meet the growing student enrollments of the department of about 770 undergraduate and graduate (MS) students with 17 faculty members. The five areas of CE emphasized in the undergraduate degree plan are structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction management, transportation engineering, and water resources/environmental engineering. The graduate program will focus on four areas of environmental/water resources, structural/geotechnical, construction/transportation, and energy/infrastructure. The department is one of the fastest growing departments in the university. Minimum Qualifications:

 

(1) Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a related field of study from an accredited institution (at least conferred before the start date of September 1, 2023).(2) Evidence of high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems with applications in Structural Engineering.(3) Demonstrated ability (or a well-designed plan) to develop and maintain a funded research program to lead multidisciplinary collaborative projects, and support graduate students.(4) Have experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Civil Engineering.(5) Demonstrated ability to play a collaborative role as a team member in initiatives for partnerships with schools, community colleges, government agencies, and industry to create an eco-system that will bring economic prosperity to the Rio Grande Valley.(6) A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service.

 

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

 

Preferred Qualification:

 

(1) Experience and/or demonstrated ability teaching main courses in Structural Engineering such as Statics, Dynamics of Civil Structures, Mechanics of Materials, Structural Analysis, RC Design, and Structural Steel Design. (2) Experience and/or demonstrated ability developing and teaching courses integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or intelligent engineering systems content within the context of civil engineering applications for the graduate program.(3) Experience and/or demonstrated ability to lead and propose new research projects and proposals to attract external federal, state, or private funding, such as NSF, DoD, DOE, NIH, USDOT, NASA, TxDOT, or others.(4) Experience and/or demonstrated ability working with undergraduate and graduate engineering students.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
