HDL is looking for an Aviation Engineering Department Manager to join our team in Anchorage or Palmer. As the Aviation Engineering Department Manager, you will collaborate with team members to design innovative solutions to some of the toughest airport challenges in Alaska and the world. You will be supported by an experienced team of professionals with significant experience tackling tough challenges. Airports provide the only consistent access to many Alaskan communities, and the work you will do will help maintain the livelihood and safety of many communities. You will have the opportunity to share your knowledge and mentor younger engineers.

Aviation engineering is an integral part of our practice at HDL. In this role, you will work on a wide range of airports, including small hub airports in rural Alaska and general aviation airports in towns and cities.

ABOUT YOU

You are a licensed professional engineer with at least 10 years of experience in managing teams and leading aviation projects. You’re comfortable leading the development of airport layout plans and airport master plans, as well as the planning and design for upgraded runways, taxiways, aprons, access roads, navigational aids, pavement, markings, and lighting systems.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Supporting marketing and sales by preparing competitive proposals and fee proposals to gain new work
  • Developing new client relationships and maintaining existing relationships
  • Overseeing the progress and development of multiple aviation related project deliverables at once
  • Applying your knowledge of FAA design criteria and aviation design best practices to provide workable solutions to engineering problems on small and large multi-disciplinary aviation projects
  • Preparing engineering reports, memos, and specifications
  • Leading and working together with engineers, engineering assistants, technical staff, subconsultants, and contractors to complete projects on schedule and within budget
  • Acting as a mentor to other staff and encouraging careers of interns, engineering assistants, and other engineers
  • Proactively and expertly communicating with co-workers, clients, contractors, regulators, and the public
  • Demonstrating a commitment to client satisfaction

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position involves office and fieldwork. Fieldwork will often be performed in remote locations throughout Alaska, frequently accessed by a small aircraft, four wheeler, snow machine, etc. While working in the field, inclement weather may be encountered.

When in the office, this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Occasional climbing, kneeling or crouching, and reaching with hands and arms may be required.
