Requisition Number: JPF07850

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites applications for tenure-track faculty position(s) in the general domain of civil engineering materials, with a focus on “Materials for a Sustainable Future.” Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or related fields including, but not restricted to: Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Geochemistry by the date of hire. The position is open at all levels but hiring at the level of assistant professor is preferred.

Applicants for the position must have a demonstrated record of excellence or show exceptional promise for high-quality research, teaching, professional development and the ability to build an extramurally funded research program in the strategic area of materials for sustainability and carbon management. Specific focus areas include:

(a) System-level chemical engineering, process design, and process modeling,
(b) Materials for large-scale CO2 capture & removal and elemental recovery, and,
(c) Large-scale additive manufacturing of cementitious materials.

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department and the Institute of Carbon Management (ICM) house comprehensive laboratories that are equipped to carry out pioneering studies relevant to materials design, fabrication, and characterization across length scales. Access is available to high-performance computing (HPC) platforms via university-wide initiatives. The department hosts very highly-selective undergraduate and graduate programs, and is engaged in various research collaborations, both within engineering and with a spectrum of departments and programs at UCLA, across the UC system, and with other universities and across industrial sectors.

Formal screening will begin on November 15, 2022, for a July 1, 2023 appointment. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants must submit a detailed curriculum vita, full contact information for three to five references (including an email address), a research plan, and teaching and diversity statements (6 pages total excluding curriculum vita).

The department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for not only exceptional research and excellence in teaching, but who also have a clear commitment to enhancing the diversity of the faculty, graduate and undergraduate student populations (https://samueli.ucla.edu/equity-diversity-and-inclusion/).

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
