The Opportunity

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is dedicated to increasing the prominence of its Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering (CECE) department. Applications are invited for two full-time, 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor positions under the FUTURe CITy initiative – Fostering Smart Urban Transformation and Ubiquitous Resilience with Connected Infrastructure and Technology – a Smart City initiative housed within CECE. The FUTURE CITy initiative’s goal is to attract faculty who have a vision to synergistically explore wide-ranging technological advances towards better serving urban residents. For more details visit http://www.cece.ucf.edu/future-city-initiative/. The position is expected to commence in August 2023.

The department is seeking exceptional candidates for these positions with a focus in either geotechnical, transportation or construction engineering fields. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in Smart City research domains including, but not limited to:

1)  Real-time sensing, communications, and data analytics for operation of infrastructure systems such as underground structures and slopes, high-rise buildings, bridges, and safety-critical facilities;
2)  Approaches to or drawing on emerging technologies/methods such as sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, and data analytics in the areas of transportation planning, operations, and safety;
3)  Sensing for interconnected infrastructure (including transportation and geostructural systems), and computer vision applications;
4)  Interdisciplinary applications of artificial intelligence, data analytics and mixed reality (augmented reality and virtual reality) for geotechnical, transportation and construction engineering fields.

The UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science is among the nation's largest producers of engineering and technology workforce talent, and we are the No. 1 provider of graduates to the defense and aerospace industries. We have more than 40 degree and certificate programs within the college and are continuing to grow. Our students, faculty and alumni address society's greatest challenges and aspirations in aerospace, computing, energy, the environment, healthcare, transportation and more. Our education and research efforts are supported by a strong neighboring industry presence such as L3Harris Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Duke Energy, Siemens, Walt Disney World, and NASA, to name a few.

The CECE department houses active research laboratories, institutes, and university transportation centers, including large-scale structural testing, health monitoring, soil testing, and pavement materials laboratories. A unique opportunity exists for multidisciplinary researchers to work collaboratively with other well-renowned programs on campus including the Institute for Simulation and Training, the Center for Research in Computer Vision, and the College of Medicine. Located in the Orlando Metropolitan area, UCF enrolls over 67,000 students, offering excellent professional and personal opportunities. UCF offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering.
