Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering

Open Rank Tenure/Tenure-Track Faculty in ate/Full Professor – Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a tenure track/tenured, open rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) faculty position in Environmental Engineering to join our growing department, starting in Fall 2023.

The CCEE Department has a vision to accelerate its continuing excellence in research and education over the next 10 years that includes the hiring of future leaders in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the research and teaching mission of the Department, which currently has 18 faculty members, several research professors, 230 undergraduate students, and 76 graduate students. The Department is experiencing strong growth in research expenditures (approximately $7.6 million in fiscal year 2022). The Department is housed in the Centennial Engineering Center, which was built in 2008 and contains state-of-the-art civil engineering laboratories. Located in the heart of the arid Southwest, UNM has an outstanding portfolio of water-related expertise across campus that seeks to address the critical needs of communities struggling with water security locally and around the world. Important contributors to these efforts include research centers within the Department: the Center for Water and the Environment (an NSF CREST Center), the UNM Resilience Institute, and the Southwest Environmental Finance Center, all of which are experiencing outstanding growth. The University also collaborates closely with nearby national research laboratories including Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Air Force Research Lab.

Candidates with a track record and background in the field of Environmental Engineering are invited to apply. Areas of interest include but are not limited to drinking water treatment, advanced technologies for water reuse, advanced membrane technologies, other technologies related to water and/or wastewater treatment, sustainable engineering, environmental remediation, and environmental resilience.

To qualify, candidates must have a Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related field by the appointment date. Applicants will be evaluated on these preferred qualifications: (1) their ability to develop an externally funded research program in one of the focus areas described above that complements existing Department strengths and leads to collaboration inside and outside the Department; (2) their commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and ability to teach core and advanced environmental engineering courses; (3) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working broadly with diverse communities; and (4) registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or plans to pursue PE registration.

The University of New Mexico is the premier research university in the state of New Mexico, as well as a Carnegie R1 Highest Research Activity Institution and a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution. The UNM School of Engineering is partnering with ADVANCE at UNM, an NSF Institutional Transformation grant, to help recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty.

The University is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a diverse and culturally rich metropolitan area (population of about 900,000 residents) listed as one of the best small cities in the U.S. by National Geographic Traveler. The city has a rich culture and a location offering unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventure. The University is located within one hour of Santa Fe, three hours of Taos, and within minutes of the Sandia and Manzano mountain ranges, which offer great opportunities for hiking, biking, rock climbing, skiing, and other outdoor activities.

For best consideration, complete applications must be received by December 1, 2022. The position will remain open until filled. A complete application consists of (1) a cover letter that explicitly identifies the candidate’s area of expertise in the focus areas described above (two-page maximum), (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a description of the candidate’s research interests and vision (two-page maximum), (4) a description of the candidate’s teaching philosophy and interests (two-page maximum), (5) a statement demonstrating the candidate’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success (one-page maximum), and (6) the names and contact information (address, email address and phone number ) of three professional references.
