Tenure-Track Assistant Professor – Computational Mechanics

The Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Mechanics to join our growing department starting Fall 2023.

The CCEE Department has a vision for unprecedented growth in research and education over the next 10 years that includes an aggressive search and hire of the future leaders in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the research and teaching mission of the Department, which currently has 18 faculty members, several research professors, 230 undergraduate students, and 76 graduate students. The Department generates over $7.0 million in annual research expenditures. The Department is housed in the Centennial Engineering Center contains state-of-the-art civil engineering laboratories. The Department research centers include Dana Wood Materials and Structures Lab, the Center for Water and the Environment, the UNM Resilience Institute, and a regional University Transportation Center (UTC). The University of New Mexico also enjoys close collaborations with area research laboratories such as Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Air Force Research Lab.

Candidates with track record and background in the field of Computational Mechanics are invited to apply. Areas of interest include but not limited to computational mechanics in the areas of geomechanics, fluid dynamics, biomechanics, structural mechanics, probabilistic mechanics, poromechanics, composite mechanics, and/or finite element modeling.

To qualify, candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering, or a field closely related to the above focus area by the appointment date. Applicants will be evaluated on these preferred qualifications: (1) their ability to develop an externally funded research program in one of the focus areas described above and that complements existing Department strengths and leads to collaboration inside and outside the Department; (2) their commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and ability to teach core Structural Engineering courses including Structural Analysis and Finite Element Methods; (3) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working broadly with diverse communities; and (4) registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) with plans to pursue PE registration.

The University of New Mexico is the premier research university in the state of New Mexico, as well as a Carnegie R1 Highest Research Activity Institution and a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution. The UNM School of Engineering is partnering with ADVANCE at UNM, an NSF Institutional Transformation grant, to help recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty.

The University is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an ethnically diverse metropolitan area (population about 900,000 residents) that is listed as one of the best small cities in the U.S. by National Geographic Traveler. The city has a rich culture and a location offering unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventure. The University is located within one hour of Santa Fe, three hours of Taos, and within minutes of the Sandia and Manzano mountain ranges, which offer great opportunities for hiking, biking, rock climbing, skiing, and other outdoor activities.

For best consideration, complete applications must be received by December 9, 2022. The positions will remain open until filled. A complete application consists of (1) letter of interest that explicitly identifies the candidate’s area of expertise in the focus areas described above, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) description of the candidate’s research interests and vision (two page maximum), (4) description of the candidate’s teaching philosophy and interests (two page maximum), (5) a statement demonstrating the candidate’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success (one page maximum), and (6) the names and contact information (address, phone number and email address) of three professional references. For inquiries, contact the search committee chair, Professor Percy Ng, PhD, PE, at tang@unm.edu or (505) 277-2722.
