Job Details

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Structural Engineering.  The position has a preferred start date of September 2023.

The primary responsibilities of the position include teaching, research, and service. The ideal candidate will bring experience in general structural design (reinforced concrete, steel, timber) as well as bridge engineering.  Preference will be given to those with industry experience, potential for an externally funded research program, and a strong interest in teaching.

The Cal Poly College of Engineering strongly values diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), especially in the classroom and among its areas of study. This position is part of a college-wide cluster of searches designed to promote inclusive and equity-minded teaching strategies as well as increase curricular coverage of the intersection of engineering and computing with societal challenges, particularly around DEI issues. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the college’s goals in these areas.

In addition to the standard new faculty support, candidates selected through this DEI cluster hire will be given additional start-up funds to support their work in DEI. Once hired, candidates will collaborate with their dean and others to develop a plan for utilizing these funds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. in civil, structural, architectural engineering or a closely related field is required.  A commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required. 

The ideal candidate will show evidence of attention to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion across their teaching, scholarship, and service.

Applicants must submit a diversity statement that focuses on evidence of the applicant’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a description of how they will demonstrate a commitment in these areas in teaching, research, and/or service at Cal Poly. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: implementing inclusive classroom environments, the intersection of DEI in your research/scholarship, mentoring students with diverse backgrounds, outreach to under-represented student populations, implementing bias mitigation and previous professional development in diversity and inclusion topics.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

A P.E. and an S.E. licensure are preferred.  Previous teaching experience is desirable but not required. Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.  Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department was officially formed in 1981, though transportation and environmental engineering degree programs had been in place at Cal Poly for some time. Since its inception, the department has continued to grow. Currently, there are approximately 650 undergraduate students enrolled in the Civil Engineering Program. Approximately 200 undergraduates are currently enrolled in the Environmental Engineering Program. In addition, the department supports about 50 graduate students who are working toward a Master of Science degree. Both the Civil and Environmental Engineering Programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The programs stress teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and state-of-the-practice analysis and design techniques. Each program is laboratory intensive, with hands-on student learning stressed in support of the University's "learn by doing" motto.

Our faculty is comprised of more than 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty with extensive academic and professional qualifications. These full-time faculty are supported by over 20 full- and part-time lecturers, many of whom practice engineering in the local community.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has two separate B.S. degree programs with approximately 750 undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering Program and 200 in the Environmental Engineering Program. Both programs are ABET accredited. The Department also offers an M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with approximately 50 active graduate students.
