Description

The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York invite applications for a faculty position at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline or Senior Lecturer in Discipline, beginning in Fall 2023. Lecturers in Discipline are full-time non-tenure-track faculty members whose primary responsibility is teaching. This will be a joint appointment between the Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments. The opportunity is aimed at hiring an individual who will teach in a new MS concentration in Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Buildings, which will be jointly administered by the Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering departments. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in Mechanical and Civil Engineering, with a typical teaching load of two courses per semester.

The successful candidate will have expertise in areas relevant to the design of energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. This may include the design of building envelopes and facades, the use of innovative materials, sensing and monitoring systems, and the design/operation of mechanical systems compatible with decarbonization goals.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or its professional equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, by the start date of the appointment. Priority will be given to candidates with experience teaching courses in integrated built environment engineering programs. Candidates should also display a commitment to continuously improving education through the development of new instructional methods and courses. Ideal candidates should also have experience in or be familiar with the decarbonization challenges and retrofit issues facing existing buildings in New York City. Industry and/or private sector experience is welcomed but not required.

Candidates at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of pedagogical excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field. Candidates at the rank of Senior Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, a superlative record of teaching as a lecturer, and documented evidence of pedagogical excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities.

The Departments are especially interested in qualified candidates who will contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
