The Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech seeks applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Construction Engineering and Management.  We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research and whose teaching and research interests align with the School’s goals and the trajectory of a thriving industry. Recent initiatives at Virginia Tech include a campus-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on Intelligent Infrastructure for Human-Centered Communities as well as a focus on Industry 4.0 for Construction. Such initiatives endorse a wide range of research foci, including:

 

  • Researching intelligent, adaptable, sustainable, human-centric technologies for the built environment Exploring the tools of analysis, representation, design, construction, and evaluation directed towards new construction or adaptive reuse and performance improvement of existing structures. Innovating autonomous systems and robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality, 3-D printed structures, human-centered infrastructure systems, additive manufacturing, Internet-of-Things, wireless and cyber security. Advancing digital design and construction, human-technology interaction, robotics, semi- or autonomous systems, mixed-reality technologies, building performance, facility and energy management, building systems and controls that will support a more sustainable, resilient, and energy-neutral built environment

 

 

The School currently has 21 faculty members and is home to over 625 undergraduate and 36 graduate students. The School offers the following degrees: 1) Bachelor of Science in Building Construction, 2) Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and Management, 3) Master of Science in Building Construction Science and Management, and 4) Doctorate of Philosophy in Environmental Design and Planning.

Required Qualifications

 

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in construction or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date and must demonstrate a high potential to effectively:

 

  • develop and maintain a nationally recognized research program. teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. mentor graduate and undergraduate students. collaborate across disciplinary and cultural boundaries

Preferred Qualifications

 

State-of-the-art facilities are being constructed to support teaching and research within the Myers-Lawson School of Construction. It is therefore preferred that the candidate has teaching, research, and/or industry experience with one or more of the research foci listed above. An individual with a demonstrated commitment to our School values of inclusion, safety, service, and experiential learning, is also preferred.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (http://www.me.vt.edu/), which includes a Nuclear Engineering Program, has 67 faculty, 30 affiliate faculty, annual research expenditures of over $18M, and a current enrollment of 300 graduate students with 180 students at doctoral level, and over 1100 undergraduate students. With about 400 BS ME degrees awarded each year, the Department is the third largest in the nation in graduating mechanical engineers (2017 ASEE Data.) The Department is ranked 15th (8th in public schools) and 23rd (12th in public schools) out of all mechanical engineering departments in the nation in undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, by the 2019 U.S. News and World Report. The department operates under five thrust areas: Robotics and Dynamical Systems (RADS); Bio, Micro, and Nano Systems (BMNS); Energy Engineering and Science (ESS); Design, Materials, and Manufacturing (DMM); and Nuclear Engineering and Science (NES). The Department includes several research centers, and its faculty members are engaged in diverse multidisciplinary research activities. The mechanical engineering faculty also benefit from a number of university-wide institutes such as the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), the Biocomplexity Institute, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI); College-level centers such as the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center (UTC) and the state-level Commonwealth of Virginia Center for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (CCAPS), the Virginia Center for Autonomous Systems (VaCAS) and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM).
