Faculty Position, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rutgers University-New Brunswick

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of the School of Engineering, Rutgers University—New Brunswick, Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ, is seeking applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the area of water chemistry and process engineering. The hire is a part of the Advancing STEM Diversity in Environmental Engineering cluster supported by funds from the Rutgers Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative. The strategic diversity cluster aims to advance diversity in environmental engineering, specifically in the areas of urban environments, health, climate change, and environmental justice. The anticipated start date of the employment is September 1, 2023.

The faculty search aligns with the strategic directions of the Department and recognition of the need for building collaborative relationships between engineering disciplines and beyond. Potential areas of expertise could include pipeline corrosion chemistry, nutrient recovery innovations, sidestream processes, industrial and decentralized treatment systems, water reuse, emerging organic contaminants (e.g., PFAS, PPCPs), membranes and materials for treatment systems, and other related/relevant areas. The new hire is intended to augment research capacity at the forefront of Environmental Engineering and the university’s current strong research programs in pathogen fate/transport, bioremediation, microplastic pollution, indoor air quality, etc.  Prospective candidates should complement the current expertise and research among the environmental engineers in the CEE Department and the engineers in the Environmental Sciences Department.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a closely related engineering field. The successful candidate is expected to develop an innovative, vigorous, and externally-funded research program that addresses topics such as those identified in the recent National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report titled, “Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century: Addressing Grand Challenges”, and those which particularly focus on highly populated cities and urban systems, play an essential role in the Advancing STEM Diversity in Environmental Engineering cluster, build collaborative relationships with research programs within the School of Engineering and, other programs inside and outside the University, and engage with environmental justice community groups. The successful candidate is also expected to develop and teach new courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels within the Department that incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge and innovation. The courses would be in Water Supply and Sewerage, Unit Processes, Design of Water & Wastewater Facilities, Biogeochemical Engineering, or other courses in our ABET-accredited Environmental Engineering program and Civil Engineering program, and graduate courses relevant to their research interests. Finally, the CEE Department is committed to promoting and maintaining a diverse and inclusive culture and is, thus, interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service.

The CEE department desires to hire faculty who seek to develop an interdisciplinary research program that connects with faculty from other programs, departments, and units at Rutgers, including the Center for Advanced Infrastructure & Transportation, Departments of Environmental Sciences, Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, Marine and Coastal Sciences, or the School of Public Health. The successful applicants will be eligible for membership in a variety of university-wide institutes that foster collaboration, including the Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, the Rutgers Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, and the Center for Green Building. Applicants should also have an interest in networking with professional societies and connecting students with professional networks.

To apply, please go to https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/184827. See posting for special instructions. Applicants should submit a letter of application, CV, statements of research and teaching, and a statement on plans or accomplishments in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and a list of three references. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2022. Questions may be directed to: Nenad Gucunski, Professor and Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rutgers University, gucunski@soe.rutgers.edu.
