The City of Austin is one of the most diverse municipal organization with over 10,000 employees. Our mission is to make Austin the best-managed City in the country, along with our vision of making Austin the most livable City in the country. Our employees make a difference every day in our community. Our organization operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City of Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members who represent ten districts.
The Watershed Protection Department was established in 1991 to manage Austin's lakes, creeks, and drainage infrastructure. The mission of the Department is to reduce the impact of flooding, erosion and water pollution on our community to protect lives, property and the environment. To do this work, our department has approximately 360 employees whose jobs range from flood engineers to stream ecologists to field crews. We inspect, maintain, and/or repair 1,100 miles of storm pipes; 9,000 public and private stormwater ponds; and several miles of natural waterways.
