Director: Maryland Transportation Institute

Position Summary/Purpose of Position

The University of Maryland seeks applicants for the position of Director of the Maryland Transportation Institute (MTI) hosted within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the Clark School of Engineering. The individual appointed as the MTI Director must have the professional stature to represent MTI to government agencies (Federal, State, and local), industry partners, and professional organizations. The MTI director needs to have the skills and experience bridging the research to transportation practitioner use. A Ph.D. in transportation or related fields is preferred but not required.

Duties
The MTI Director is expected to communicate and promote the strengths of MTI in data science, data analytics and visualization, modeling, simulation and optimization of complex transportation systems, traffic systems and traffic management, air transportation, freight transportation, public transportation, multi-modal and sustainable transportation.
The MTI Director should work with Governmental officials at all levels as well as private industry and organizations to build a vision for research and training needs and identify potential sources of funding opportunities for MTI researchers and faculties through networked connections and marketing skills.
The MTI Director must facilitate the transfer of MTI-developed technologies to requisite public and private organizations. They are expected to work closely with MTI’s appointed faculty advisory board and seek its consensus regarding MTI activities and to manage the personnel effectively.

The A. James Clark’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ranks in the top 20 public civil engineering undergraduate programs in the country according to the US News and World Report Rankings. In addition to the MTI center, new centers and institutes that have been established include the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute (MEII), the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices (REFBDI), and the Quantum Technology Center (QTC). The innovation and entrepreneurship programs on campus recently brought the University to the top 10 in Entrepreneurship Magazine.

Dedicated external relations staff to help promote faculty research, which has been featured on covers of Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, ABC, Fox News, People Magazine. Opened Clark Hall in January 2018 with almost 40,000 sq. ft of lab space and an innovation lab for capstone design projects and student teams. The Great College Park initiative is a $1B public-private investment in the town that is the home of UMD.
