Why Arup?

Arup is a collective of designers, advisors and experts dedicated to sustainable development, working globally. Founded to be humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology, and rigour to shape a better world.

The Resilience, Security and Risk (RS&R) Practice focuses on building resilience into the design and operation of the built environment. This ranges from contributing to the design of infrastructure; to assessing both accidental and malicious threats to various sectors and client organisations; to operational security matters beyond project completion.

Our Manchester RS&R Team has developed a strong portfolio of projects and clients, including government agencies, multi-national corporations, sports stadia, transport, energy, and critical national infrastructure operators. We are now looking to build on this to embrace the difficulties the 21st century presents to security professionals in an ever-changing threat landscape.

The Opportunity

We are seeking talented Structural Engineers who have experience leading projects, a broad knowledge of structural engineering design and an interest in specialising in resilient structural design to join our Manchester team.

Blast engineering requires a markedly different approach to design, working outside of traditional design codes but still requiring a designer's empathy with regards to aesthetics, form, and function. Blast engineers typically work from first principles to evaluate the fundamental behaviour of structures under extreme loads using various methods (linear and non-linear) and develop innovative design solutions.

This role represents a great opportunity for someone to build their professional standing in the industry, or to build on their existing skills and develop into the specialist field of Protective Design.

You will demonstrate an aptitude for critical thinking working closely with clients to understand, and define their design requirements and will pursue quality in every aspect of your work, from technical investigation and design to the development of client relationships and the commercial performance of your projects. Our priority is to attract high-quality staff who have the ability to work in a collaborative environment, and who show the potential for excellence both technically and across the full breadth of the role.

Responsibilities of the role include:

Be responsible for utilising excellent applied knowledge of mainstream structural engineering design practice and develop your understanding of how to model such structures against transient dynamic loading. You will provide technical input across a broad range of projects across the resilience, security, and risk practice, including the wider protective design space beyond your core discipline of blast engineering.

You will assist in the preparation of threat and vulnerability risk assessments for malicious threats (including terrorism, crime, and civil disruption) and develop and implement coherent, risk-based security strategies and integrate protective design and/or blast engineering measures from concept through detailed design to construction, working collaboratively with other members of the multi-disciplinary project team and the protective design team.

You should apply for the role if:
  • An experienced Structural Engineer or Senior Structural Engineer with a Bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering (Master's degree preferred) and a solid background in mainstream structural engineering design is required.
  • As a Chartered Engineer, you will also be a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, or an equivalent professional organization.
  • Experience working on large or technically diverse infrastructure or building structures projects is required. An understanding of structural engineering analysis and design would be beneficial.
  • In order to fulfill the requirements of specific projects, you should be able to complete the HMG BPSS Check and National Security Vetting at the SC level.
  • Experience in the use of a structural software packages such as GSA, Strand7, LS-DYNA and/or SAP2000 for analysis and design would be beneficial.
