PURPOSE:  The City of Brookfield is looking to hire an experienced City Engineer to join our Public Works team.  The City Engineer performs professional-level work implementing, supervising and managing engineering projects and programs through all stages of City public works projects.  The incumbent utilizes engineering principles and practices to design and administer municipal construction projects, inspection, surveying, solving and implementing solutions related to traffic, proposed or existing infrastructure, and land development issues.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Promotes department vision and overall goals and objectives of the City to all staff.  Manages and directs activities, projects, and programs required of the Engineering Division. 
  • Makes recommendations about changes in programs and alternative methods.  Oversees construction of public infrastructure for new development, redevelopment and existing development. 
  • Makes decisions about project priorities and quality control of construction plans.  Recommends approval to boards and commissions. 
  • Manages consulting engineering contracts and construction projects.
  • Directs the selection, training, supervision, evaluation, and discipline of divisional staff. 
  • Prepares division work schedules and coordinates with other supervisors to manage coverage of schedules. 
  • Prepares annual budget for Engineering Division and makes budgetary decisions. 
  • Makes recommendations on which projects to fund, based on needs and cost-effectiveness.
  • Represents and consults with the community, city officials, businesses, and contractors regarding compliance issues and project development.
  • Promotes and maintains positive departmental public relations and image with customers, which include other City departments and staff, contractors, developers, property owners, and the community in general.

  • Prepares engineering studies and engineering scope of services. Provides final planning and design services.  Approves preparation of contract documents and resolutions.  
  • Approves and administers necessary legal documentation and manages design and construction activities for public works projects.
  • Prepares and reviews traffic studies and presents recommendations to the Board of Public Works to eliminate traffic hazards.  Ensures compliance with state and local requirements on public works projects.  Provides final approval on all project plans.

THE REQUIREMENTS:  

  1.  Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. 
  2.  At least 10 years of civil engineering and/or municipal experience, preferably in the public sector. 
  3.  At least 5 years supervisory or managerial experience. 
  4.  Wisconsin Professional Engineering Registration required or the ability to obtain within 6 months. 
  5.  Valid state of Wisconsin driver’s license required.              
  6.  Considerable knowledge of design and construction of urban streets, drainage systems, sanitary sewerage systems, and water distribution systems. 
  7.  Considerable knowledge of applicable engineering and computer software programs, including word processing and spreadsheets.                  

2023 SALARY RANGE:  $103,126.40 - $134,064.58 annually with excellent benefits.
