Job Description:

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR (Tenure Track/Tenured) in Coastal Engineering.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Center for Computation and Technology at Louisiana State University invite applications for one joint tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank, with relevant interdisciplinary expertise in Coastal Engineering. The start date for this appointment is anticipated to be August 2023.  We are seeking candidates with strong interests and demonstrated successes in computational coastal engineering research related to the following topics: natural hazards and flooding; sediment dynamics; ecosystem dynamics and coupled physical/biological processes; coastal resiliency and sustainability; and estuarine and deltaic processes.  Desired expertise is in one or more of the following areas: (1) regional hydrodynamics and coastal processes with physics-based and data-driven computational approaches, including discretization, model reduction, machine learning, optimization, and uncertainty quantification; (2) data assimilation using field observations and remote sensing to improve understanding of coastal processes; (3) coastal hazards mitigation, coastal resilience, and disaster preparedness and management through simulation-based engineering; (4) storm surge and storm-driven sediment transport and geomorphic changes; (5) hydrodynamic model development involving flows through submerged and emergent vegetation, and mixing in rivers, lakes, coastal waters, and estuaries; (6) integrated modeling of coupled biogeomorphic processes in the coastal zone; (7) modeling socioeconomic impacts of coastal flooding and sea level rise; and (8) design of sustainable coastal resources, energy infrastructure and water resources security through smart, adaptive coastal planning, based on computational approaches including digital twins, data analytics, data fusion, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

LSU is designated as the Flagship University in the state of Louisiana and has more than 200 faculty dedicated to coastal research (https://www.lsu.edu/coast), with LSU-based centers including the Coastal Studies Institute, Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio, and Center for River Studies. Coastal engineering faculty are key contributors to the LSU President’s recently announced initiative on coastal research (https://www.lsu.edu/president/priorities/coast.php), along with related agriculture, biotechnology, defense, and energy initiatives. Currently, the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (https://www.lsu.edu/eng/cee) has 23 faculty members, over 100 graduate students, and 650 undergraduate students. Current strengths of the CEE Department include coastal engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, structural engineering, mechanics of materials, and transportation engineering. The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (https://www.cct.lsu.edu) is an interdisciplinary research center with more than 40 jointly appointed faculty from a wide range of fields, including six faculty members focused on coastal research. CCT researchers have access to state-of-the-art High Performance Computing platforms and support at LSU.
