Resonant with the Institute and School priorities, the CEE Department has Water Resources, Infrastructure Resiliency, and the Environment as priorities and are interested in recruiting an individual who is committed to addressing the challenges of infrastructure resiliency in the 21st century.
We seek candidates with expertise in applying data science, including machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), to large datasets to improve understanding, analysis, and design of natural systems, engineered processes, and ecosystems. Candidates who make contributions meeting UN Sustainability Goals via resource optimization, energy efficiency, waste reduction, clean energy, low carbon growth, and hazard-resilient and sustainable infrastructure and operations in the fields of transportation, geotechnical, or environmental/water engineering are welcome.
Areas of interest also include development of new data science methods and tools, including hybrid methods that combine data science and more conventional approaches. The Rensselaer campus also offers rich opportunities for collaboration through various centers, including the Darrin Freshwater Institute, the Jefferson Project, the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies (CBIS), the Scientific Computation Research Center, the Geotechnical Centrifuge Center (CEES), and the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation, and the Environment (CITE) among others.
The CEE Department at Rensselaer has a rich and distinguished history – CEE offered the first civil engineering (1835) and first environmental engineering (1960) degrees in the United States. Today, CEE has 18 faculty, ~250 UG and 70 graduate students, and offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The department is highly interdisciplinary with faculty working across the theoretical/computational/experimental interfaces for each of the sub-disciplines: Environmental/Water, Geotechnical, Transportation, and Structures. Research in these areas has been supported by numerous federal and state agencies.
Candidates should demonstrate their ability to apply data science to develop insights into mechanisms or strategies otherwise not approachable using standard analytical tools. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in new institute initiatives in Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Computing (DAIC), Energy, the Built and Natural Environment, and Smart Systems (EBESS), and/or the Future of Water.
The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree or foreign degree equivalent in civil/environmental engineering or in a closely aligned field, a record of high-quality research and teaching, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and have attained national and international visibility.
Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must exhibit, through their accomplishments, the promise of future distinction in research, scholarship, and education.
Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must possess a record of excellence in scholarship as demonstrated by an emerging national and/or international reputation and a significant funding record, high quality educational activities, including teaching and advising, and a significant level of service to their department, institute, and the profession. Candidates possessing professional engineering registration or the ability to obtain it will be considered favorably.
We welcome candidates who will bring diverse cultural, ethnic, national and international perspectives to Rensselaer’s work and campus communities.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity, Race/Gender/Veterans/Disability Employer.
