Specific geotechnical engineering and geomechanics subareas of interest to the department include: Soil-structure interaction; Geo-hazard analysis and mitigation; Application of multi-scale computational modeling, data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence techniques to geotechnical engineering; Resilience, durability, and life-cycle assessment of geotechnical infrastructure; Research that improves community resilience to increasing climate hazards through performance-based design and adaptation of geotechnical assets.

This position is part of a City College cluster hire, spanning multiple Divisions of the College and focused on environmental, cultural, and social justice in New York City and the Harlem community. The Department of Civil Engineering has 18 full-time faculty members in four areas of concentration: Environmental Engineering, Structures/Mechanics, Transportation, and Water Resources. Our faculty engage in a wide variety of research efforts with international, national, regional, and local agencies as well as private entities to address both regional and global complex infrastructure demands and challenges. The Department houses several CCNY centers and CUNY institutes. Our faculty conduct research through several centers such as the CUNY Environmental Crossroads Initiative, the Center for Water Resources and Environmental Research, the CUNY Institute for Urban Systems, the Institute for Municipal Waste Research, the Institute for Transportation Systems, NOAA Center for Earth Systems Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies, and the University Transportation Research Center. CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering’s $35 million in external research last year classified it in the top 10% of US engineering institutions.

CCNY is the founding institution of CUNY and one of CUNY’s flagship campuses, and is the only public institution offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in civil engineering in New York City. The Department of Civil Engineering is committed to the rigorous training of students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to become future leaders in engineering firms, agencies, and professional organizations.
