Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Civil & Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department. The Chair reports directly to MSOE’s Executive Vice President of Academics and has overall responsibility for leading the department’s academic programs. The Chair works collaboratively with the department’s talented faculty, staff and students to build on the department’s strong legacy and reputation as one of the top ranked engineering programs in the United States among universities whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The CAECM Department currently serves more than 400 students across three undergraduate programs in architectural engineering, civil engineering and construction management as well as two graduate programs in architectural engineering and civil engineering. Several specializations are available, including structural engineering, mechanical and electrical systems engineering for buildings, environmental and water resources engineering, transportation engineering, municipal engineering, and construction management. The department has 15 full-time faculty members of various rank and expertise, and two academic staff members who support the department’s faculty and students. This is a full-time administrative position and carries an Associate Professor or Professor rank commensurate with experience and credentials.

Position Description

The Chair of the CAECM Department has the following administrative duties and responsibilities:

  • Recruits, appoints, evaluates, and plans professional development for departmental faculty
  • Provides leadership for the ongoing improvement of program curricula, laboratory, and other physical resources necessary for effective instruction
  • Is responsible for establishing the teaching and departmental assignments for the members of the department each semester
  • Prepares an annual budget request for submission to the Executive Vice President of Academics, approves all expenditures from the departmental budgets, and ensures that expenditures do not exceed the approved budget allocations
  • Consults with the departmental faculty on teaching methodology, course syllabi documentation and textbook selection, as appropriate
  • Represents the department as a voting member on the Executive Educational Council as well as other institutional committees
  • Prepares annual performance evaluations for faculty and staff within the department
  • Provides leadership to program directors and faculty regarding ABET accreditation for the undergraduate programs in the department
