The Position The Chief Building Official is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Building Services Division and is a contributing member of the Planning and Development Services Department leadership team. This position coordinates, supervises, and manages building project review as well as permitting and inspection activities involving the interpretation and application of building codes. Reporting to the Planning and Development Services Director, the Chief Building Official collaborates with colleagues across Planning and Development Services to consistently articulate a vision for service by identifying goals, developing and implementing work plans, and establishing and monitoring work measures to achieve desired results. The Chief Building Official provides oversight of customer service delivery and actively supports and champions continuous improvements to ensure the direct and efficient provision of services to customers. This position ensures policies, practices, and management products are consistent and properly communicated internally and externally. The Chief Building Official leads internal efforts, stakeholder engagement, and discussions with Boards and City Council to evaluate, amend, and adopt updated building and energy conservation codes. Specifically, this position manages the periodic review and analysis of new building codes and standards and coordinates the public review process. The Chief Building Official develops and maintains project plans, evaluates progress, and coordinates project activities in collaboration with staff. This position facilitates building project review activities with customers and staff involving the interpretation and application of building codes for new residential and commercial construction, commercial tenant finishes, remodels and additions, project completion, and occupancy. The Chief Building Official also assists in the enforcement of the City’s building and housing codes and land use regulations. The Chief Building Official leads and develops a talented and dedicated team. They support cross-departmental collaboration and work effectively with Code Compliance and Code Enforcement. The successful candidate works with the Chief Fire Marshal to resolve issues relating to unsafe structures as well as dangerous conditions and occupancies. This position also collaborates across the organization on citywide responses and emergencies. An attentive leader, the Chief Building Official identifies the needs of staff and applicants before problems emerge, finding opportunities in places where they may not be immediately evident. The Chief Building Official easily maintains internal and external relationships, values diversity of thought, and believes in fostering mutual respect at all levels. Qualifications A minimum of five years’ leadership experience in the building, planning, or construction fields with direct supervisory experience in plan review, building construction, and/or inspection is required. Experience managing projects and public processes is essential as is working knowledge of building materials and standards and current construction practices and methods. A bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field, or demonstrated expertise in the building trades through a combination of training, certification, and/or experience is required. Compensation and Benefits The salary range for the Chief Building Official is $108,000 - $132,000 annually with an anticipated hiring range of $120,000 - $130,000 annually and will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate.
