Principal Engineer

To provide technical leadership and guidance in their relevant discipline i.e. Civil/Mechanical/EICA/Process/Hydraulic Modelling/Hydraulics to a design team in the delivery of water and / or wastewater projects. The role involves detailed technical analysis as well as financial project management and ensuring project delivery.

Will be expected to act as a leader of parts of / complete schemes working with PDL and stakeholders to ensure delivery, value for money and innovation are brought into the process.

Safety & Environment:
Operate in accordance with the corporate health and safety, environment and quality standards and ensure the project team comply with such standards .
Develop and maintain project related Health and Safety strategies including risk assessments that Manage risk and mitigation to acceptable levels.
Ensure that designs deliver environmental and sustainable solutions.
Hold self and others to account driving H&S behaviours through both design and the widerstakeholder group
Technical:
Lead a delivery team for a range of Water and / or Wastewater projects. Key Accountabilities include:
Technical guidance to / leadership of the project team
Stakeholder liaison and report preparation.
Lead in the preparation of design calculations, specifications, datasheets and technical content of contracts.
Carry out approval of designs and ensure technical governance & QA is adhered to within the team
Financial management of projects to ensure profitable delivery
Management of sub-contractors including supplier selection, performance appraisal and invoice approval
Resolution of complex design issues.

Actively research and seek industry best practice to provide innovative standardisation.
Collaborative working with the supply chain and delivery partners to drive efficiency.

People:
Lead and manage the senior design engineers within their discipline.
Work with the PDL to identify staffing requirements and take an active role in the recruitment of new staff in order to develop the team
Management of continual professional development of Senior Engineers, Engineers, Graduates/Technicians).
Take responsibility for coaching and mentoring of junior members of staff, work with senior managers to ensure staff are engaged.
Work with other principals and PDLs to create an environment where staff feel able to innovate and challenge where failure is used as a positive reinforcement.

Financial & Commercial
Ensure lowest whole life cost and TOTEX solutions are delivered to outperform the business plan.
Work alongside PMs and PDLs to manage to assist in budgetary accounting.
Analyse/assimilate financial information to make business decisions & cases.
Negotiating and influencing with senior internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to / produce design plans for the schemes you are involved in and be able to track performance against these.

Programme
Ensure design programme is achievable, provide early warning of delays and ensure designs are delivered on time.

Customer:
Ensure designs are aligned with customer expectations to ensure outcomes and promises are kept.
Raise the profile of the company through attendance and presentation at technical and commercial conferences and preparation of papers and press releases.
Qualifications

MEng/BEng/BSc or HNC in an Engineering, Environmental or numerate science related subject.
Chartered Engineer of an appropriate Engineering /Scientific Institution

Knowledge/Experience

Proven and demonstrable technical background in delivering water and / or wastewater projects within the UK Water Industry to time and budget whilst in compliance with quality, safety and environmental procedures.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the engineering theory and principles relevant to their particular discipline.
Worked at a Principal/Senior Engineer (or equivalent) for at least 5 years with extensive knowledge of solution development and design.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the commercial operating environments of consultants, contractors and suppliers, relevant to the particular discipline. Understanding of the commercial processes of the organisation. Complete and detailed understanding of the AMP cycle.
Knowledge of the audit processes and practices in relation to the application of technical standards to design, construction and operation activities, developing standards that balance the risk between safety, customer expectations, compliance, OPEX and CAPEX
