The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Wayne State University invites applicants for a faculty position in the general area of mobility and transportation infrastructure.  We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in: engineering toward emergent smart cities including ITS, autonomous vehicle technology, and infrastructure and asset management (especially in the area of sustainable pavement design).

Expertise should include perspective on and practice in the integration of social and economic equity into engineered transportation networks.  We welcome and engage interdisciplinary interests in connecting with current departmental and college strengths in the areas of air and environmental quality, transportation network risks and vulnerability due to natural and anthropogenic threats, and sustainable infrastructure materials, design, and construction.  The search is for candidates to be hired at the assistant professor level. The preferred start date is August 17, 2023.

The incumbent will teach core courses and develop new courses that complement CEE’s existing undergraduate core, transportation, and related graduate curricula.  We put a high value on quality, engaged mentoring and advising of both undergraduate and graduate students.

The desired candidate must have a transportation-focused Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a suitably-related field from an accredited university.  The incumbent should either have a P.E. license, or a commitment to obtain a P.E. license within two to four years of employment.

As with any vigorous academic engagement, the successful candidate reflexively seeks out and collaborates with researchers in other departments, colleges, and universities, demonstrating talent in translating basic and applied research into engineering practice.

A history of successful collaboration with departments of transportation and local agencies is also desired.  Successful research is characterized by externally funded, published, and presented work in recognized journals and at topical conferences.

Applications must include: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, the names and contact information for at least three references, a two-page statement of research interests, a one-page statement of teaching interests and pedagogy, and electronic copies of up to three representative publications.  We seek faculty members who embrace a growing Wayne State Warrior culture of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Justice.  To this end, candidates should provide a statement regarding their views on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in the forum of transportation engineering, including past and current contributions as well as their vision and plans for the future in these areas.
