Role Overview

Contractually, all MOD projects must have a safety and environmental management programme in place throughout the lifecycle with designated Safety and Environmental Subject Matter Experts (Safety SMEs) responsible for delivery of the proscribed safety and environmental artefacts and the provision of safety advice.

This role is for a Safety and Environmental Engineer who can undertake the duties detailed below and work with a Safety Manager to enable DXC to meet safety and environmental related contractual responsibilities on specific projects. Most tasks, and resulting advice or artefacts, are software related, although hardware and health and safety aspects are also included. It is anticipated that the person filling this role will have at least 5 years experience of software safety engineering.

A minimum of SC clearance is required.

Day to Day Responsibilities

Provide the safety assessments undertaken within the assigned workstream, which will involve the following activities:
Review of new tasking for safety assessment;
Review and safety assessment of Change Requests and Defects;
Undertaking safety analysis of new functionality including Functional Failure Analysis (FFA); Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)/ Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA); Fault Tree Analysis (FTA);
Participation in some Engineering Reviews in support of the Safety Manager;
Attendance and input at Software Code Inspections

Input to the ongoing management of a project/programme Safety and Environmental Management Plan in order to maintain compliance with the latest MOD safety/environmental policies and with the local Sites Environmental Management System (EMS) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP);
Liaison with the Governance and Design Teams;
Participation in Safety Panel/Working Group meetings in support of the Safety Manager;
Examination of potential safety risks;
Design of safety aspects of the emerging solution;
Safety options assessment;

Production and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets should these be required;
Maintenance of existing safety documentation.

Essential Skills

Suitably qualified System Safety Engineer possessing:
Up-to-date knowledge of Government Policy and UK (and other relevant) legislation concerning Functional Safety, Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (e.g.: Def Stan 00-51, Def Stan 00-55, Def Stan 00-56, ASEMS (POSMS & POEMS), JSPs 375, 418 and 815);
Knowledge and experience of demonstrating functional safety with air platforms and support systems and associated standards (e.g. SAE ARP 4754, SAE ARP 4761, RTCA/DO-254, MAA Regulatory Articles);
Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Safety and Environmental engineering techniques including:
- Demonstrating functional safety within software intensive systems and associated standards (e.g. RTCA/DO-178B, RTCA/DO-200A, IEC 61508);
- Safety and Environmental Management Plan production/maintenance;
- Safety Argument development using Goal-Structuring Notation (GSN) or Claims-Argument-Evidence (CAE);
- Safety Management Systems development at all stages of the programme (i.e. requirements, production and operational), including the production and presentation of appropriate safety cases and safety assurance reports;
Experience of stakeholder management within the Defence domain;

Desired Skills

Knowledge and experience of working in the Defence Aviation Domain;

Knowledge and experience of working with Aircraft Mission Planning Systems;

Previous experience of Hazard Identification (HAZID), Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOPS), Operating and Support Hazard Analysis (OSHA), Occupational Health Hazard Analysis (OHHA), Hazard Log development and management (using databases, such as DOORS and Cassandra/e-Cassandra);
Knowledge of software development methods and safety related information systems;

Some experience of software development;

Knowledge of the MOD Sites within the UK.
