Assistant Professor Specializing in Environmental Engineering

The University of Dayton, Department of Civil / Environmental Engineering is seeking a teacher-scholar at the rank of tenure track assistant professor with a specialization in environmental engineering, to begin August 16, 2023.

 Expectations

The successful candidate will demonstrate a potential for excellence and a willingness to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental engineering with a focus on water quality issues or treatment design, and be willing to teach one or more fundamental civil engineering courses. The successful candidate is expected to engage and lead students in externally sponsored research and participate in undergraduate and graduate student advising and mentoring. Collaboration is encouraged within the department, across the university, and externally. The successful candidate is expected to support inclusive excellence which supports the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university, and profession.

Opportunities

Opportunities for collaboration are diverse, with examples including the department’s Intelligent Infrastructure Systems Center, the Ethos R&D program in the School of Engineering’s Ethos Center, the university’s Hanley Sustainability Institute, the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), and sciences such as environmental biology and environmental geosciences. The Dayton area offers unique opportunities for engineering faculty to work with researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory located at Wright-Patterson AFB, the Environmental Protection Agency’s  Breidenbach Environmental research center, regional academic institutions such as The Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati, and Confluence --a Water Technology Innovation Cluster of industry partners. 

The Department, School of Engineering, and University

The CEE Department offers a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering. It also offers a Master’s of Science in Civil Engineering, and partnerships with other departments for Ph.D. student mentorship. The department has established a Center for Intelligent Infrastructure Systems to foster multidisciplinary research for enabling technologies to advance the planning, design, construction, and operation of infrastructure toward digital transformation and enhanced human- artificial intelligence synergy. • An earned Ph.D. in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field by July 1, 2023. Record of scholarly research in environmental engineering. Articulated potential for teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels in water quality issues and treatment engineering topics, and commitment to embrace effective and innovative teaching strategies related to this field of study that support inclusive excellence. Effective written communication skills.

A 1-2 page statement of candidate’s vision for use of innovative teaching approaches and commitment to effectively delivering courses in undergraduate and graduate levels in water quality issues and treatment engineering topics in the University’s civil/environmental engineering programs.
