New Mexico State University-Academic Department Head for Civil Engineering

Job Type: Full-Time

Department: College of Engineering-Civil Dept

Job Purpose

The Department of Civil Engineering at New Mexico State University is inviting nominations and applications for the position of Department Head.  We are seeking visionary candidates who can lead a diverse faculty-team with expertise in structural, geotechnical, water resources, and environmental engineering.  The applicant is expected to build upon ongoing State, Federal, and Industrial initiatives and bring their expertise in related emerging areas in Civil Engineering.

New Mexico State University (NMSU), a Land Grant and Space Grant university in Las Cruces NM, is one of three Research Universities in the State.  New Mexico is an EPSCoR state and NMSU is classified as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), with a total minority enrollment of over 67%.  The Civil Engineering Department is one of five departments within the College of Engineering at NMSU.  The Department has a long tradition of maintaining ABET accreditation and serving the educational and research needs of the State.  The Department currently has 12 tenured/tenure track faculty, one Professor of Practice, three adjuncts, and 250 undergraduate and 70 graduate students (30 MS and 40 PhD).  Our faculty are active participants in several regional and national research centers, including NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG), DOE-National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI), and the DOT-Transportation Consortium of the South-Central States (Tran-SET).

Essential Functions

Successful candidates are expected to have an appropriate record of growth in scholarship, research, and service, currently holding the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.  Demonstration of scholarly achievement, including a record of publications and a history of successful funding from industrial/State/Federal grant agencies, are required.  Preference will be given to those with a track record of team-building, fund-raising, and a definitive vision and commitment to lead our department towards achieving the Goals of NMSU Leads 2025 and R1 status.

Required Qualifications

Prior experience as associate head/head of department, center director, or similar role in a leadership capacity; experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring students; experience with online programs; interactions with stakeholders; engagement with diversity and equity issues along with diverse students will be given due considerations.  This is a 12 mos. position.  Candidates must hold a doctorate in civil engineering or related field.
