Principal Civil Engineer

If so, J Murphy and Sons Ltd are currently recruiting for a Principal Civil Engineer to join our award-winning Energy team. Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry. The Principal Civil Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of high quality, safe and efficient civil engineering designs for substation and linear HV transmission projects using knowledge and experience to manage consultants and develop internal design capability.

Following the ‘One Murphy' approach, we're able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. J. Murphy & Sons has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector.

What you will be doing:

To be the focal point for external designers' interface into the wider Murphy Power Engineering and Design function, to ensure the successful implementation of client & Murphy technical and procedural requirements.
Leading the technical delivery of civil designs including producing and checking calculations and drawing production against project scope, British and European standards, and industry best practice
Undertaking Design Risk Assessments and actively contributing to project HARARD/HAZID/HAZON reviews
Coordinating with Design coordination/management functions and interfacing with other design disciplines.
Reviewing client ITTs
Developing civil design and construction strategies including producing scope of works
Identifying key project risks and opportunities developing potential mitigation measures
Engaging consultants and other specialist suppliers through the procurement function
Identifying key risks and opportunities - developing mitigating actions and ensuring adequate provisions are made
Supporting Project Management function including identifying Early Warning Notifications to customers and developing Compensation Events submissions where required.
Reviewing subcontractor EWNs and consequential Compensation Events, implementing mitigating measures where appropriate
Programme and resource management of civil design activities
Reviewing external civil designs to ensure specification compliance, SHESQ, constructability and value has been considered

What are we looking for?

Bachelor or Master's degree in Civil Engineering
Experience working within Electrical Transmission and Distribution and/or Oil and Gas sectors. Comprehensive HV substation design and construction experience.
National Grid TP137 CDAE Civil Substation or Cadent/National Grid G17/35 Gas transmission authorisations
Experience of work winning including risk identification and mitigation
Knowledge and experience of a Principal Contractors duties as Principal Designers under CDM Regulations 2015
Chartered Status with ICE and/or IStructE
