Assistant City Engineer

The City of Lake Jackson is 21 square miles of lush landscape and natural beauty alluding to its name, “The City of Enchantment.” The City is located about 50 miles south of Houston, and 12 miles from the Gulf Coast. With 27,879 residents in 18 square miles, Lake Jackson offers the amenities of a large city, while maintaining a small-town feel.

The Engineering Department provides project management and engineering support services for Public Works and other City departments. The Department is also responsible for the construction management of various (CIP) Capital Improvement Plan projects. The Assistant City Engineer is responsible for reviewing and designing engineering plans for conformance to City regulations and serving as the City Engineer when necessary. This position evaluates and reviews engineering plan submissions to ensure adequacy of design and compliance with City requirements. They design CIP and other public works projects and serve as project engineer and/or project manager on assigned projects. The Engineer ensures drawings, maps, and pertinent documents of various sizes and materials are scanned, archived, readily available, and easily accessible through the City’s intranet (including virtual private network (VPN)) by updating an in-house developed Excel spreadsheet. They also oversee the Engineering department’s interactive map, ensuring full accessibility through the intranet and VPN.

The City of Lake Jackson seeks an experienced, knowledgeable Assistant City Engineer. The ideal candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of civil engineering techniques and construction practices, particularly as applied to municipal public works. They will have a working knowledge of standard engineering design principles and techniques; current versions of Autodesk Civic 3D and AutoCAD Map 3D (or replacements) software; pertinent Esri ArcGIS products, with ability to create/edit shape and data tables, and produce various maps using layout features; hydrologic and hydraulic modeling (2D and 1D/2D) and of the more popular software; and software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM and others.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and at least two years’ experience, after registration as a Professional Engineer, in the design and review of engineering plans for conformance with municipal design and regulation is required. Experience in design and project management of related projects is required. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered. Experience in use of Autodesk Civil 3D and Storm and Sanitary Analysis, ArcGIS Desktop basic and related software preferred. Candidates must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or be able to obtain one within one year.

The salary range for this position is $79,800-$103,830 depending on qualifications and experience.
