St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a leader for our well- established Growth Management Department Transportation Division whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The Chief Engineer for St. Johns County Growth Management Department will be responsible for managing the engineering technical review staff for St. Johns County development. The team includes both engineering staff and inspection staff, as well as supervision of the County’s floodplain management program. Employees work in a team-oriented environment and coordinate with other Departments and Divisions to provide the best services to our citizens and to maintain the quality of life that brought so many to St. Johns County.

 

 

 

The ideal Chief Engineer, Growth Management Transportation candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:

 

  • Supervise the engineering and inspection staff. Reviews, evaluates and presents technical analyses of applications scheduled for public hearings. Directs the Development Review technical staff in highly complex technical matters concerning plan review and construction inspections functions. Coordinates with Public Works and County engineering staff on matters related to construction and infrastructure. Responds to elected officials on matters pertaining to engineering standards and practices. Attends meetings to discuss project coordination, procedures, and acceptance. Directs all aspects of the county’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program. Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel. Maintains a full-time presence on the job. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Candidates are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related course of study to the occupational field. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require five to eight years of related experience with at least five years of experience in a supervisory capacity. Must possess and maintain certification as a Professional Engineer by the State of Florida. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position. Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others. Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language. Must be able to operate a computer.
