Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Associate or Senior Editor, Nature Cities

Location: London, NYC, Berlin, Shanghai, Tokyo, Madrid, Washington DC (other Springer Nature office locations also considered)

Full Time, Permanent Role

Closing date: 5th April 2023

Springer Nature is seeking an editor with a PhD in hand and a strong quantitative background (e.g. engineering, urban science) to join the editorial team of Nature Cities, a new journal that will launch in 2024.

Does understanding the different dimensions of cities and their roles in our changing world interest you?  Do you marvel at the similarities and differences within and across cities – of people, institutions, built forms, and broader environments? Do you enjoy reading outside your area(s) of expertise and making linkages among fields and ideas? The editors of Nature Cities will do all of these while working together to convene a range of advances and insights rarely featured in one venue.

Nature Cities will publish original research, reviews and opinions on cities, urban issues and urban environments – past, present and future – as well as on the ways cities impact and are impacted by their broader social, economic and ecological environments, near and far. It will consider submissions from the natural and social sciences, engineering, planning, policy, and other areas. Nature Cities will join a portfolio of SDG-linked titles, which includes Nature SustainabilityNature FoodNature Energy and Nature Climate Change.

We currently seek an editor with a strong quantitative background to help develop, launch and establish Nature Cities as the leading publication in cities research. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Editor and the broader team on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript assessment and peer review; commissioning and editing reviews, opinion, and News & Views articles; and occasional writing. We are especially interested in those with expertise in:

  • Engineering (e.g. civil, mechanical, urban)
  • Physics (e.g. statistical mechanics)
  • Urban science

Applicants must have a relevant PhD and, preferably, postdoctoral or equivalent experience. Editor positions are demanding and intellectually stimulating. Broad knowledge and training; excellent writing, speaking, and time-management skills; the ability to absorb new areas; and an interest in the practice and communication of scholarship are required. Applicants should be dynamic, collegial and outgoing, with excellent interpersonal skills. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences, so willingness to travel is essential.

The positions are offered on a full-time, permanent basis and can be located in our London, New York, Madrid, Berlin, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, or Washington, DC offices (hybrid working).

To apply, please send

  • a brief cover letter explaining your interest and preparation and your salary expectations
  • a CV;
  • a selection of 4–5 articles recently published that you think represent the scope of research relevant to cities (provide the full reference and a link to the article, and give a brief rationale for your choice)

Closing date: 5th April 2023. Early applications are strongly encouraged, and we will review applications on an ongoing basis.
