Team

The Technical Sourcing & Standards team is an integral part of the Asset Management Directorate, reporting to the Director of Asset Management, and is responsible for the development of innovative plant, overhead line, underground cable, switchgear, transformer, protection and civil engineering standards and the technical sourcing strategies that deliver best in class asset solutions at the lowest life cycle cost. The team is a point of reference both within UK Power Networks and for external stakeholders in relation to all items of plant and equipment, that is intended to be connected to the electricity distribution network at all voltages from low voltage up to 132kV.

Nature and Scope

There is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to join the team and to become involved in the development of civil design standards, asset protection and associated materials and equipment. The role typically includes the following:

Introduction of new and innovative technology for electricity distribution assets.
Development of design standards to provide in-house and external resources with a comprehensive suite of standards.
Contribution to our knowledge of assets.
Building strong relationships with other stakeholders in Asset Management and UK Power Networks. This may include meeting customers or their professional representatives on matters relating to design standards.
Carrying out failure analysis to initiate corrective actions.
Carrying out site visits which will include entry to operational substations where compliance with safety rules and procedures is mandatory. Training will be provided as necessary.
Visiting manufacturers and suppliers to assess their ability to supply equipment compliant with the Company's requirements.

Responsibilities

Developing the civil design standards to ensure technical compliance with regulatory requirements and a harmonised UK Power Networks approach, while considering future requirements and ensuring a safe and reliable electricity network.
Production of high-quality technical documentation covering equipment specification, design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance activities.
Proactively taking ownership of associated documentation and ensuring it is current and update.
Specification, sourcing and approval of substation equipment and materials including working with suppliers on the development of new products.
Carrying out factory audits and factory acceptance testing.
Preparing training and communication material for the above.
Carrying out failure and incident investigations in a timely manner to initiate corrective actions and identify continuous improvement opportunities. This may require visits to operational substations and visits to manufacturer's works.
Resolving technical queries associated with equipment, standards, and processes.
Taking an active part in the company's technical forums and relevant ENA working groups.
Supporting other members of the team, Asset Management, and other departments.
Applying an innovative approach to all aspects of the role and introducing new ways of working.
Supporting the company's innovation initiatives and assisting the innovation team.
Building strong working relationships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify business needs and opportunities.
Producing technical reports for presentation to the business at all levels.
Complying with the requirements of the designer as determined by the CDM Regulations.

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience

A civil engineering background and relevant experience in building works preferably within the electricity distribution or other utility sector gained from academic study and or relevant work experience.
A degree in civil engineering and, a chartered engineer or working towards it. Alternatively, an HNC in civil engineering and relevant field experience.
Proficient in the use of AutoCAD and able to develop comprehensive civil engineering drawings and electrical schematic drawings.
An understanding of industry, national and international standards relevant to substation civil design and material specification.
A working knowledge of UK Power Networks civil design standards including application to Completion-in-Connections, ideally from experience working in a planning, design, or operational role.
A good understanding of health and safety including Construction Design and Management (CDM) and how it impacts the role and the wider business.
An understanding of regulatory requirements, asset lifecycle, asset management, procurement, and equipment sourcing.
A high standard of technical writing and be able to produce clear, concise, and understandable specifications, standards, and reports.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word (including styles, tables, cross-reference, templates, macros etc.), Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
Ability to plan, manage and deliver work under own initiative and unsupervised.
Strong interpersonal and team working skills and be competent in written and oral communications.
Articulate, numerate and competent in resolving a significant range of technical engineering issues and providing technical advice.
A good level of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness.

Desirable Skills and Experience

Experience in roadworks, drainage, structural steel works, cable routes, cable trenches, installation of power cables, substation buildings, structures to support outdoor distribution equipment, fences and high security features, secondary oil containment, building services, ventilations systems, fire suppression systems, drainage systems.
Experience in M&E or building services design and specification.
Knowledge of the Planning Application system in England.
Knowledge of distribution equipment including switchgear, transformers, overhead lines, underground cables, protection and earthing etc., and a willingness to increase understanding in these areas.
Development experience using SharePoint, PowerBI, PowerApps, VB.NET or VBA.
