Civil Engineer (Flood Risk Management)

35 hours per week
£29,513 - £32,177 / £32,561 - £35,626 / £36,119 - £40,079 (including Distant Islands Allowance) depending on qualifications and experience

Orkney provides a beautiful setting in which to live and work and a wonderful opportunity to combine a fulfilling and challenging career with the best that the islands can offer in terms of lifestyle.

Our vibrant and forward-thinking community is regularly voted the happiest and the best place to live in the UK. Our quality of life is second to none. With a rising population, excellent local services and a multitude of opportunities and facilities to cater for whatever your interests outside of work may be.

We are looking for a Graduate Civil Engineer to join our Engineering Services Team. The team has a diverse workload which includes new works and maintenance covering roads, bridges, harbours, airfields, flood protection and development infrastructure.

The Council has recently published the next Local Flood Risk Management Plan for 2022 to 2028 which contains actions to reduce, mitigate and alleviate the impacts of flooding on our communities. Reporting to the Lead Engineer (Flood Risk Management) you will be involved in the delivery of actions developed from the plan which may include the project management, design and construction of flood protection works.

Whilst the Council is the smallest in the United Kingdom, its roles and responsibilities and the range of infrastructure is broad, hence the engineering team draws enormous satisfaction from the diversity and intensity of work.

You will hold a degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent level qualification and have good IT capability including CAD. You will have an interest in flooding and also climate change issues. Some experience of sustainable drainage design is desirable for this role.

This is a career grade post and salary will be linked to progression through a career development scheme.

This post meets the employer's requirements for sponsorship from level 3 of the career grade structure.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

This post is subject to Basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting David Custer, Service Manager Engineering, e-mail or telephone 01856 873535.

Closing Date: Sunday 28 May 2023

Please note that interview expenses are payable for this post but relocation expenses are dependent on qualifications and experience.
