Job Details
The City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is one of 171 American Public Works Association (APWA) certified agencies in the nation and we continue to grow, delivering award winning projects such as the internationally recognized new St. Pete Pier, as well as awards for infrastructure upgrades and sustainability. The Engineering & Capital Improvements Department will be embarking on major infrastructure projects and extensive system capacity upgrades, implementing both the integrated water and wastewater master plan which includes water, wastewater, reclaimed water and stormwater master plans. Also included in this infrastructure upgrades are roads, bridges, and seawalls, as well as vertical assets such as the new Shore Acres Recreational Center, all focused on resiliency and sustainability.
With such a major replacement and upgrade program, the City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is looking to expand its team to include additional Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, and other essential staff to be part of delivering and advancing its community into a new era.
This is very responsible professional civil engineering work of a supervisory nature including the planning, investigation, location, design and construction of municipal engineering and public works projects. Work involves application of engineering skills and knowledge to perform difficult projects; and lead supervisory responsibility over other technical and professional employees assigned to specific projects. Work requires the exercise of considerable judgment and initiative; the application of professional engineering knowledge in evaluating the cost effectiveness, safety and practicality of construction methods; and providing technical support for all activities, such as preparation of plans, specifications and technical reports.

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:
- Have a valid Bachelor’s degree. Have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to qualify as an Engineer in Training or have experience as a Florida registered Professional Engineer (PE). Have a minimum of two (2) years of civil engineering experience. Possess and maintain a valid Driver License. Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Have knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of civil engineering construction and design. Be skilled in the use of a personal computer and computer software including: 1) Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare reports, analyses and studies, and 2) the latest Civil 3D application.
Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:
- Are able to plan, assign and supervise the related work of professional and technical employees. Are able to gather, organize, interpret and compile relevant engineering information and data to provide a basis for sound decision making. Are able to perform hydraulic analysis and modeling of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Are able to perform error-free advanced mathematical calculations such as trigonometry and calculus. Are skilled in technical writing, engineering cost analysis and project scheduling. For Water/Wastewater Experience: Extensive experience in design of Water/Wastewater Facilities. Technical proficiency in plant process systems.
For Stormwater Experience: Extensive experience in stormwater modelling using EPA SWMM and ICPR 4.0. Technical proficiency with GIS software ArcMap and software package ArcHyrdo. Modelling and database management experience with SWFWMD’s GWIS-ICRP modelling approach. For Environmental Experience: Extensive experience in DEP Processes for site remediation, monitoring, testing and compliance. For Transportation Experience: Extensive experience in design of pedestrian safety improvements. Extensive experience in design of roadway improvements.
