You might know us for the great work we do across our wide variety of projects. We're proud to say it's thanks to our people's diversity of thought, expertise and knowledge. And when you join us, you'll be a part of this genuinely collaborative environment, where everyone's voice is valued and treated equally.

We're passionate about what we do, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. Simply put, this a great place to be. So, when it comes to your life outside of work, ask us about our flexible and remote working policies designed to help you get the most out of life.

Join our Nuclear & Power Division, as a Senior Civil Engineer and play a pivotal role, in transforming the UK into a ‘Net Zero' economy. We've been in the Nuclear sector for over 50 years and have delivered over 7 million work-hours, which makes us the most prominent nuclear engineering consultancy in the UK. In this highly technical role, you'll lead from end-to-end on a broad range of projects, with plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself and support the development of your peers.

Our Team:
  • Our Reactor Operations & Decommissioning team is part of SNC-Lavalin's Nuclear & Power business.
  • Our multi-disciplinary team is made up of Programme & Project Managers, Engineers, and Scientists. We also collaborate with a wide variety of technical specialists from across the wider SNC and Atkins' business.
  • We work across a whole variety of projects to keep the UK's existing nuclear power stations running safely, and to decommission the stations which have reached the end of their life. This includes planning and environmental support, project management, multi-disciplinary engineering, waste management, reactor physics and chemistry as well as conventional engineering and construction such as roads, utilities & drainage. We also have a growing capability in supporting the final demolition of structures and the removal of plant and equipment from nuclear sites.

The Role:
  • As a Senior Civil Engineer, you'll be responsible for helping to develop the technical solutions to our client's problems. This is likely to involve working as part of a wider team, and we'll help you to take on responsibility for delivering technical tasks or packages of work. We'd like you to support the development of our junior engineers either through direct ‘on-the-job' leadership and mentoring or through more informal guidance as you go about your day-to-day role.
  • Our reputation for excellence is centred on collaborative working and delivering the right engineering solutions to our clients' problems. To do this, the relationships we have with our clients are critical. We will support you in taking the lead on developing relationships with people in our key client organisations. We'll expect you to be able to develop those relationships based on mutual trust, openness and honesty.
  • The role may also include supporting business development and bidding activities.
  • Many of our most interesting and challenging projects require Atkins staff to work from our client's sites. This offers an amazing opportunity to get face-to-face with the delivery of nuclear decommissioning projects.

The Person:
  • We are looking for people who relish in technically challenging engineering projects. You should have the ability to solve complex problems and be able to clearly communicate ideas and solutions to others. Our ideal candidate will have a strong background in contributing to the delivery of civil and/or structural engineering projects. You will be proactive and have excellent communication and presentation skills. You will also have an appreciation of the commercial aspects of consultancy and design projects, being able to identify project risks and to ensure mitigations are identified and in place. You will get real enjoyment and satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues.
  • Staff development and career progression is crucial to our business - we truly believe in succeeding together as a team. We are therefore seeking highly motivated people that can help others to develop and achieve their potential.

Key skills and behaviours:
  • You will be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer (CEng MICE or IStructE).
  • A strong drive to ‘make a difference' and deliver change.
  • You will enjoy communicating and interacting with others.
  • You are able to break down and explain complex ideas in a simple way.
  • You focus on ‘outcomes' rather than ‘inputs' and have a delivery focused attitude.
  • You enjoy client relationship management and people leadership.
  • You can manage your own workload and the work of others, working flexibly where required.
  • You will have an appreciation for the commercial and contractual aspects of delivering engineering consultancy work.
  • You see the value in a diverse and inclusive work environment and demonstrate this in the way you go about your work.
  • Strong technical background, particularly in the design and assessment of steel and reinforced concrete structures.
  • The ability to understand and solve complex problems, rather than designing from a ‘blank page'.
  • A desire and willingness to spend time out of the office and support the delivery of decommissioning work on power station sites.

About Us:

This is an exciting time for us - we are diversifying our portfolio to become a more global organisation, while also continuing to grow our services in the Nuclear and Power New Build sector in the UK. Although you will join our Reactor Operations & Decommissioning team, we resource our projects on a ‘best athlete' principle - finding the best candidate for each opportunity. What this means for you, is that there there will be opportunities to develop your skills and experience working across a wide variety of different projects and roles. We expect your career to develop and grow, and we will support you on your journey. There are also some exciting opportunities for international travel.
