We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Assistant Engineer - Rivers & Coasts to join our Amey Consulting team in Scotland. We have design hubs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Motherwell, Perth, and Aberdeen together with additional office space in Dumfries, Ayr, Dundee, Nairn and Huntly.

Our Amey Consulting Scotland Team are involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, with the Southwest being awarded in 2020 and the Northeast in 2022. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.

With the main impact of climate change on our highway and rail infrastructure being scour we are looking to further develop our industry leading team in this area. Climate change has resulted in flood events increasing in magnitude and in frequency, increasing further the risk of scour, which is why the importance of developing our team further in this area is paramount.

Our work includes:
  • Inspection and assessment of scour
  • Developing and implementing scour monitoring solutions
  • Design of scour protection solutions for coastal and fluvial environments
  • Hydraulic modelling
  • Flood alleviation solutions in fluvial and tidal environments
  • River diversions, improvements, and training works

You will play an important part in every stage of a project from inception to completion and you will be exposed to a wide range of experience that will assist in your professional development. You will be responsible for
  • Development of safe and sustainable engineering solutions to a wide range of challenges
  • Preparing feasibility studies, calculations and outline/detailed designs
  • Carrying out site visits, surveys and inspections and assisting with site supervision
  • Scour assessments
  • Developing design drawings
  • Preparing carbon and whole-life cost estimates
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technical specialists
  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable
  • Assist in the team's compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM regulations
  • Supporting development of Graduate Engineers and Technicians
  • Keep up to date with your own personal development to ensure the natural growth of the team and progression with your chosen professional institution

We want to hear from you if you have
  • 2 years post graduate experience working towards professional qualifications (CEng/IEng through ICE, CIHT, IHE or IStructE) status having completed some of the necessary training requirements
  • Experience of delivering competent designs of minor and major road schemes for trunk and local roads.
  • Working knowledge of the DMRB and local authority design guidelines.
  • Experienced in some of the following, AutoCAD, Bentley MX, Civils 3D, Keysoft packages, Mircrodrainage etc;
  • Working knowledge of DMRB, TSRGD, Cycling by Design, Roads for All and Sustrans Design documents.
  • Experience in roads, traffic and transportation feasibility and design
  • Good CAD, roads design /traffic modelling skills
