What youll be doing

An exciting opportunity to be part of a growing civil engineering team that is creating the intelligent client that Thames Water needs to be to achieve its AMP7 ambitions and beyond.

Focusing on Civil/Structural Engineering, the role will provide the capability needed to:
  • Undertake feasibility assessment and provide concept and outline design of engineering solutions to address identified business needs on civil assets
  • Get the right technical requirements within project definition briefs with regards to modification and/or extension of existing structures or construction of new structures.
  • Input and continuously improve technical asset standards
  • Provide technical assurance during the delivery, commissioning, and hand over of assets
  • Drive the digital advancement of our engineering within the corporate digital strategy by inputting to the development of digital twins of some of our assets
  • Ensure and deliver the engineering regulatory compliance on relevant assets in the civil engineering area

Key areas of accountability include:
  • Direct the collation and interpretation of data such as As-built drawings and operational data required to establish structural integrity of existing assets.
  • Undertake structural condition/capacity assessments of civil assets on our water and wastewater treatment works and in the network. Advise on feasibility of proposed modifications.
  • Remaining Life Assessments of existing structures
  • Engaging and Liaising with internal stakeholders such as Operations and System Planning teams.
  • Undertaking root cause analyses to understand causes/sources of the engineering issues affecting performance of existing assets and develop the most viable solution.
  • Support junior engineers and review/check their project deliverables
  • Provide technical leadership to civil asset condition inspections and where required have a hands on approach to also undertake assessments.
  • Briefing consultants engaged to undertake Asset Condition Surveys on some of our critical civil assets.
  • Undertake the Technical Lead/LDE role on structures biased schemes and producing project briefs.
  • Asset Standards, Low Carbon Concrete, DFMA
  • Reviewing and accepting Asset Health/Condition reports produced by internal teams and external consultants and contractors.
  • Support the establishment of a cohesive, sustainable engineering structure from graduate to industry experts that leads Thames Waters engineering requirements into AMP8 and beyond

What you should bring to the role
  • Be a recognised principal engineer in civil/structural engineering with significant experience in the water industry.
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent in relevant engineering discipline and chartered.
  • Good understanding of analysis, design and maintenance of civil structures such as pipe bridges, water retaining structures, large diameter brick sewers, shafts.
  • Previous experience in water and wastewater treatment works design
  • Previous experience in undertaking hydraulic assessment of water and wastewater treatment works
  • Preferably with skills and knowledge to identify and assess the effect of complex hydraulic phenomenon such as surge, vortex and air entrainment in operation of water and wastewater systems.
  • Familiar with water industry regulatory framework and regulators (Environment Agency, OfWAT, DWI).
  • Experience of working with external stake holders such as Network Rail, TfL, National Highways
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams with strong ability to communicate own ideas and effluence decisions
  • Preferably past experience in undertaking transient analysis and developing surge protection measures
  • Capable of managing own time and junior engineers when working in multiple projects
