Description - External
Job overview
We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants, and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. As a wholly independent organisation we are owned in trust for the benefit of our employees and their dependants, with no shareholders or external investors, allowing us to determine our own business priorities and direction.

The Resilience, Security and Risk (RS&R) Practice focuses on building resilience into the design and operation of the built environment. This ranges from contributing to the design of infrastructure; to assessing both accidental and malicious threats to various sectors and client organisations; to operational security matters beyond project completion.

Our Manchester RS&R Team has developed a strong portfolio of projects and clients, including government agencies, multi-national corporations, data centre providers, sports stadia, transport, energy, and critical national infrastructure operators. We are now looking to build on this to embrace the challenges the 21st century presents to security professionals in an ever-changing threat landscape. The RS&R Manchester practice leverages the portfolio of Clients available to the wider RS&R group whilst maintaining a smaller, close knit team shape. The Manchester team is expanding quickly; as such, members of the Manchester team have the best of both worlds - the backing of a large firm whilst maintaining the autonomy and vigour normally reserved for smaller enterprises.

Blast Engineering
We are seeking talented Structural Engineers who have a broad knowledge of structural engineering design and an interest in specialising in resilient structural design to join our Manchester team.

Blast engineering requires a markedly different approach to design, working outside of traditional design codes but still requiring a designer's empathy with regards to aesthetics, form, and function. Blast engineers typically work from first principles to analyse the fundamental behaviour of structures under extreme loads using various analysis methods (linear and non-linear) and develop innovative design solutions.

This role represents a great opportunity for someone to build their professional standing in the industry, or to build on their existing skills and develop into the specialist field of Protective Design.

You will demonstrate an aptitude for critical thinking and demonstrate independent judgement; work with clients to understand and define their design requirements; and will pursue quality in every aspect of your work, from technical analysis and design to supporting the development of client relationships and the commercial performance of your projects.

Our priority is to attract high-quality staff who have the ability to work in a collaborative, challenging environment, and who show the potential for excellence both technically and across the full breadth of the role.

Role description
You will:
  • Utilise an excellent applied knowledge of mainstream structural engineering design practice and develop your understanding of how to model structures to resist transient dynamic loading.
  • Provide technical input across a broad range of projects across the Resilience, Security and Risk practice, including the wider protective design space beyond your core discipline of blast engineering.
  • Assist in the preparation of threat and vulnerability risk assessments for malicious threats (including terrorism, crime, and civil disruption).
  • Develop and implement coherent, risk-based security strategies and integrate protective design and/or blast engineering measures from concept through detailed design to construction, working collaboratively with other members of the multi-disciplinary project team and the protective design team.
  • Understand structural/blast concepts and have the ability to turn the concepts into design.
  • Undertake the façade blast engineering design of a wide range of glazed and non-glazed façade systems.
  • Carry out blast modelling using engineering software including computational fluid dynamic modelling and finite element methods.
  • Undertake the structural blast engineering design of a wide range of structures in common and novel engineering materials.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the multi-disciplinary project team, the global blast engineering and protective design team and other Arup teams in the successful delivery of projects and assignments.
  • Communicate effectively with clients using a variety of written, verbal, drawn and sketch communication on the assessment of risk, the methodology of the assessment and design process undertaken, illustration of results in a manner that best aids understanding, and strategically advising on the design outcomes.

Required skills and qualifications

You will be a Structural Engineer with minimum Bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering (Master's degree preferred) with a strong background in mainstream structural engineering design.

You will be a practicing engineer with typically 3-5 years of experience, working towards Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional body such as the Institution of Civil Engineers and/or the Institution of Structural Engineers. Progression toward membership of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) (www.ice.org.uk/rses) is desirable but not a prerequisite of the role.

You will have relevant professional experience, including experience working on large or technically challenging infrastructure or building structures projects. An understanding of first principles of structural engineering analysis and design would be beneficial.

Desirable skills and qualifications
  • Experience in the use of structural analysis software packages such as GSA, Strand7, LS-Dyna and SAP2000 for analysis and design.
  • Experience in the design of structures in steel, reinforced concrete, timber and/or masonry in accordance with British Standards and/or Eurocodes.
  • An understanding of construction methodologies and consideration of buildability issues within the design process.
  • Effective technical and project leadership abilities, including a proven ability in the delivery of projects that meet objectives in terms of time, quality, and cost.
  • A proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines.
  • Experience in blast engineering or a related security discipline; or in the design of structures to resist dynamic loading such as seismic loads; is desirable but is not essential.
  • Be able to complete the UK Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check and be capable of achieving National Security Vetting at the Security Check (SC) level if required for specific projects.
  • Experience developing more junior staff members, primarily focussed on technical skills.
