The Opportunity

In support of our journey towards becoming a recognised global leader in offshore wind Arup currently has an exciting opportunity for a principal structural design engineer to join our established and growing offshore wind design team. You will deliver project designs for our clients, with a focus on the structural design of offshore wind foundations where a deep understanding of our client's objectives is critical to your success. As a competence centre within Arup for offshore wind engineering, our highly skilled UK team supports projects across the UK, Europe, APAC and the US, working with many of the major developers in the industry. You will be able to use existing and create new processes for efficient design, including automation and digitalisation. The role requires project experience and core technical skills in the sequentially coupled load analysis procedure for offshore wind sub-structure design, including the ability to critically assess and extend current methods and tools and seek out opportunities for continuous improvement. Although the focus of the role is technical you will have the opportunity to grow in other areas that you enjoy or would like to explore, such as project management, colleague training, bid management and service innovation.

Is this role right for you?

A person who is a good fit for the role will have:
  • Experience of delivering the FEED and detailed design of offshore wind turbine sub-structures on projects in UK or European waters, including authoring design reports and technical notes, and completing as the design consultant successful ILA processes with one or more wind turbine supplier.
  • Expert knowledge of offshore wind design codes and can confidently present and discuss design approaches with our clients and certification companies. In-depth knowledge of the super-element and load exchange process between sub-structure designer and wind turbine supplier is essential.
  • Excellent knowledge of structural mechanics, structural dynamics and hydrodynamics. Publications in some of these areas relevant to offshore wind design will be considered advantageous.
  • Excellent working knowledge of one or more typical offshore structural analysis package and proficient coding skills - particularly in Python or Matlab.
  • A driving ambition to grow Arup's position in offshore wind engineering design, using your technical competence and experience to establish credibility with Arup's customers.
