As part of our dynamic UK Highways team, you'll directly influence our business growth and project portfolio expansion, working closely with our sector director and senior management. Your role extends from initial client enquiries through tender and delivery stages, managing projects, and contributing to the growth of our client base.

This unique role offers the chance to blend leadership with technical expertise. Ideally, you're a Chartered Engineer with a robust track record in highway projects, capable of managing mid-sized projects or delivery of design packages in large-scale initiatives.

We expect you to lead multidisciplinary teams, comprising Engineers, Technicians, and external suppliers, in delivering superior project outcomes. You'll be the face to our clients, ensuring their needs are met and nurturing these crucial relationships for BakerHicks' sustained success.

Key Purpose
  • Drive multi-disciplinary projects by leading project delivery and providing technical oversight.
  • Nurturing professional growth within project teams, aiding in resource planning, and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
  • Exhibit technical leadership and comprehensive knowledge in highway engineering.
  • Cultivate client relationships and engage with stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Actively manage a diverse portfolio of projects delivered by our dedicated multidisciplinary design team.
  • Managing project budgets and resources to deliver high-quality outcomes on schedule.
  • Supporting the Sector Director in business development strategies, business expansion efforts, and realising our business plan.
  • Coordinating project deliverables, site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, and tracking progress against the project brief.
  • Ensuring clarity in resource allocation and project requirements across design disciplines.
  • Take a proactive role in preparing tenders, reviewing bids, estimating fees, defining scopes of work, and managing changes.
  • Monitoring project fee expenditure and commercial objectives, maintaining communication with design teams to keep project delivery on track.

Accountabilities
  • Foster a high-performance team environment that encourages professional growth and development.
  • Ensure team adherence to company quality standards and best practices.
  • Oversee staff in the production of design deliverables, costings, and other project-related tasks.
  • Leading tender submissions preparation and delivery for competitive bids.

Requirements

Essential
  • Chartered status with a professional institution.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in highways design and familiarity with design standards and specifications.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven team management experience.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to bids and proposals.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other offices as required.

Desirable
  • Experience leading design in a design-and-build environment on road projects.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary projects and teams on large highway projects.
  • Experience with NEC contract administration, including managing contract notifications and change control.
  • Experience working with Smart Streets and Intelligent Transport Systems.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
