The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is seeking a total of five (5) multiple Junior/Assistant/Associate Engineers for Capital Improvement, Private Development, and Traffic Engineering assignments. Candidates should be highly motivated, experienced, seek professional growth, and desire to lead and support in the delivery and review of various City projects.

As a Junior/Assistant/Associate Engineer, you would support our department’s mission to operate, maintain and improve the City’s infrastructure. Public Works is responsible for the maintenance, repair, cleaning, and construction of sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, streets, streetlights, traffic signals, active transportation infrastructure, publicly owned parking lots and garages, pump stations, a major lagoon, and dams and levees. Our department also reviews plans and inspects the construction of public improvements to serve new private residential, commercial, and industrial developments, and administers contracts for the collection, disposal, and recycling of solid waste. Public Works is also responsible for the City’s review and management of right-of-way impacts associated with private development and traffic operations.

What You’ll Do:

The Junior/Assistant/Associate Engineers will help support efforts to accomplish short and long-term project deliveries, while sustaining the City’s mission, vision, and goals. Positions are considered for the following fields of interest:

  • The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Section’s key assignments include planning, designing, reviewing, and preparing detailed engineering plans, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, contracts, and related documents for a variety of capital improvement projects. Roles include project manager and construction manager, with duties that include leading coordination meetings, interfacing with construction contractors, outside engineering firms, construction inspectors, and other public agencies.
  • The Private Development Section’s key assignments include reviewing development plans, technical studies/reports, maps, encroachment permits, building permits and being able to guide an applicant through the entitlement process regarding public impact and infrastructure.
  • The Traffic Engineering Section’s key assignments include delivery of traffic-related capital improvement projects, neighborhood related traffic concerns, traffic operations implementation and management, traffic engineering policy development, traffic impact analysis review, and conducting traffic engineering studies.

What You Bring: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Junior Engineer:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering or a related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California driver's license.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate is desirable, but not required.

Assistant Engineer (in addition to the qualifications for a Junior Engineer):

  • One year of experience in professional engineering work in the area of assignment.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training Certificate.   Please attach your certificate to your online employment application.

Associate Engineer (in addition to the qualifications for an Assistant Engineer):

  • Two years of professional engineering experience comparable to that of an Assistant Engineer in the City of San Mateo.
  • Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California. Please attach your certificate to your online employment application.

ADA Special Requirement:  Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:  Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist and climb; exposure to cold, heat, extreme noise, outdoors, confining workspace, vibration, and dust.
