The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seek applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the field of smart and sustainable transportation systems. The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE), one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant transportation engineering research community (learn more at https://research.engineering.asu.edu), comprising a group of faculty members who are leaders in transportation systems modeling, design of sustainable and resilient transportation infrastructure, and multimodal transportation planning across ASU and beyond.

Candidates will have a Ph.D. in civil engineering, or a closely related field, with research and scholarly focus in one or more of the following topic areas:

  • Multimodal Transportation Systems Integration: Analysis and design of integrated multimodal transportation systems with a focus on interactions between modes.
  • State-of-the-art Traffic Control Technologies: Smart traffic control systems that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to promote efficiency and safety of transportation networks
  • Sensing Technologies for Smart and Sustainable Transportation: Harnessing sensors and personalized mobile applications to enhance transportation system performance and integration with other urban systems.
  • Traveler Safety and Risk: Investigating strategies and technologies to enhance traveler safety and minimize risks.
  • Connected and Automated Vehicles: Analysis and testing of connected and automated vehicle technologies and their impacts on urban systems
  • Advanced Data Analytics and Modeling: Development of AI algorithms, machine learning techniques, and statistical and econometric methods to analyze a variety of transportation and land use data streams
  • Energy and Environmental Aspects of Transportation: Analysis of interactions between transportation and energy/environmental systems with a focus on designing sustainable and climate-resilient transportation systems
  • Innovative transportation infrastructure design: Innovations in infrastructure design and delivery to advance sustainability, impact mitigation, integration of smart technology, accommodation of safe multimodal interactions, and healthy built environments

Candidates will be expected to support the ABET accredited Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering curricula and enhance the capacity of existing centers and initiatives including the TOMNET and Travel Behavior and Demand (TBD) University Transportation Centers, the Institute of Automated Mobility (IAM), and the Arizona New Economy Initiative Extreme Environments Science and Technology Center. Situated in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, ASU offers prospective faculty members enormous opportunities to test and evaluate advanced transportation technologies and solutions.

We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of in-person and online graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research projects, and undertake service activities. Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner is desirable.

Successful candidates will support the mission of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and are expected to participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching endeavors both within and beyond the Fulton Schools. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) is currently the most involved in the interest areas of the search. The School offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Civil, Environmental, Sustainable, and Construction Engineering, and in Construction Management and Technology.  SSEBE has 60 faculty members, 1,450 undergraduate and 800 graduate students, and generates annual research expenditures of nearly $30 million per year.

This search is part of ASU’s engagement with the Arizona’s New Economy Initiative (NEI), a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing, and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience, and opportunities for all. NEI investments in the Fulton Schools of Engineering will grow our world class faculty to accelerate research outcomes and to broaden student access to our programs; support Science and Technology Centers to foster the growth of new economy industries; and expand experiential learning and workforce training opportunities.

Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. The position is anticipated to start in August 2024, but accommodations can be made for the selected candidate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in civil engineering, or a closely related field, with a focus in transportation Research and scholarly focus on transportation systems design, analysis, and technology
  • Demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank
  • Demonstrated evidence of ability to procure sponsored research and generate scholarly articles in the interest areas of the search, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank Strong written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner

For associate and full professor candidates:

  • Demonstrated record of securing external funding for research programs Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning
