The Opportunity

Your role will be to prepare structural design and analysis in co-ordination with the engineering design team as well as architects, quantity surveyors and clients for various projects in the building, industrial, vehicle design and infrastructure business areas.  You will gain a thorough understanding of the role of an engineer, experience the use of software design and analysis programs and visit sites to see the work undertaken while at the same time working towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

As a Specialist Mechanical/Structural Engineer, based in either London, Birmingham or Manchester, you will have a thorough understanding of first principles engineering and advanced analysis and be interested in diverse applications of these skills. You will have the opportunity to become involved in areas of our work that require an understanding of buildings, electric vehicles, infrastructure and renewable energy, and you will be open to developing skills in these areas. You will also be able to demonstrate aptitude and enthusiasm for digital technologies such as scripting/programming.

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include the following: 
  • Conducting finite element analysis
  • Preparing structural calculations and design
  • Completing research
  • Visiting site and completing inspections and monitoring
  • Developing digital tools
  • Writing reports and preparing presentations 
  • Attending meetings and liaising with clients 
  • Supporting senior members of the team

You will be following Arup's engineering institution-accredited graduate training scheme and be supported and mentored towards achieving Chartered Engineer status. 

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for graduates with curiosity, personal drive and technical knowhow, who can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the industry and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients.

You will have, or be studying towards, the following qualifications, attributes and skills: 
  • Engineering degree (Masters level in engineering science, mechanical, structural, civil, aeronautical or aerospace engineering) (2:1/60% or higher or equivalent) 
  • We expect a successful candidate to have taken at least one module in their third or fourth year covering one or more of the areas below and to have achieved a grade of 2:1 or above for such modules: 

                  - Structural analysis 

                  - Computational analysis / finite element methods 

                  - Dynamics / vibration 

                  - Earthquake engineering

                  - Impact / blast 
  • Interest in, or experience of, numerical analysis or simulation
