Safety & Environmental Engineer
Cheadle (SK3 0XB) - Hybrid Working

The Thales Maritime Mission Systems (MMS) Safety and Environmental Engineering team at Cheadle Heath and Templecombe carry out Safety and Environmental Engineering activities covering the full engineering lifecycle for Submarine, Surface Ship, Airborne and Minewarfare sonar systems, Command and Control, and full Combat Systems.
This is an entry level position for Engineers who want to pursue a career within Safety Engineering. The team provides support for all Thales in-service sonar systems, UK and abroad. MMS are also at the forefront of the exciting & challenging area of remotely operated unmanned vehicles for maritime/naval operations. Skills, experience & qualifications
You will be studying or have complete a degree in an engineering or relevant scientific discipline, e.g. safety, environmental, systems, software, hardware, electrical/electronics, mechanical, communications etc. Or a higher level Degree/Doctorate, or equivalent.

The Work Environment

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
System safety definition activities - safety requirements definition and determining analysis requirements;
- Engagement with, and presentation to, the Customer & End-User;
- Hazard identification, analysis and modelling to ensure our products are safe to use and the present best possible environmental option;
- Safety support to product development; research & development;
- Collaborating with various implementation teams - acoustic, hardware, mechanical, software etc.;
- Representing safety and environment at system level-design reviews;
- Ensuring safety during Integration, Verification, Validation & Qualification (IVVQ) planning and execution, including platform trials from time-to-time;
- Preparation for requirements sell-off and contract acceptance with Customer.
Skills, experience & qualifications
You will be studying or have complete a degree in an engineering or relevant scientific discipline, e.g. safety, environmental, systems, software, hardware, electrical/electronics, mechanical, communications etc. Or a higher level Degree/Doctorate, or equivalent.
Experience
- Relevant experience gained through academic or work-place activities, e.g. modelling, project work, analysis, etc.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental risk analysis.
- Quantitative risk modelling experience, such as Fault Tree or Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, or equivalent transferable experience with other analysis tools.
- General understanding of hardware, electrical or software design to underpin safety and environmental analysis.
- Willingness to develop safety and environmental engineering skills.
- Strong analytical abilities with a methodical approach.
- System modelling skills.
