The Role

Jones Bros seek a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join the project team in our Design and Construction Management Department working from Ruthin, North Wales with travel across the UK. We would encourage people seeking remote working to apply.

Reporting to the Head of Design and Construction Management, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will be involved from the tender stage of a project, through to contract delivery and handover. Each project will be assessed individually with the level of support required defined early in the process. Key responsibilities will include:


Geotechnical review and management:
  • Assess geotechnical information provided with the tender
  • Challenge the information and advise on the key risks
  • Advise on the scope for additional geotechnical investigation
  • Manage specialist consultants to ensure the correct solutions are selected
  • Input into stabilisation mix design
  • Input into the selection of the correct plant and techniques (ripping, drying, stabilisation, blasting etc)

Temporary works:
  • Provide input into temporary work design
  • Retaining structures
  • Working platforms
  • Haul roads

Materials review:
  • Classification of materials
  • Treatment of materials
  • Assessment of potential borrow pits
  • Work with the estimating team to ensure specialist materials are priced accordingly
  • Review low carbon material alternatives
  • Review, price and schedule testing requirements

Value Engineering:
  • Provide alternative solutions for temporary and permanent works
  • Retaining walls
  • Material use
  • Improvement techniques
  • Piling

Technical Writing
  • Production of specialist text for submissions

Live Sites and Quarries
  • Undertake quarry safety reviews
  • Material classification
  • Stabilisation mix design
  • Testing

External Consultants
  • Co-ordinate specialist design consultancies
  • Co-ordinate specialist materials testing laboratories

Bid Support
  • DESIGN MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE - Provide assistance, challenge and review for Pre-Construction Design Management activities undertaken by the Design management unit
  • ASSIST WITH TECHNICAL/QUALITY SUBMISSIONS - Preparation of written proposals / quality statements for bids
  • PROBLEM SOLVING - Understand and resolve complex technical, strategic and business issues

Bid Management
  • INTEPRET BID REQUIREMENTS - Fully understand the Employers Requirements and Contractual Obligations ensuring that a design is developed that incorporates these requirements
  • BID DESIGN TEAM SELECTION & BRIEFING - Identify and select designers that suit the nature and complexity of each significant project and communicate specific deliverables for each
  • BID PLANNING - Preparation of Design programme, budget and schedule of deliverables
  • BID CO-ORDINATION Develop the design and ensure that information is provided to internal departments for the development of the programme and price. Ensure all team members are aware of Technical Query updates and the implications on design, programme and price
  • COMMERCIAL REVIEW Obtain design fees, exclusions and deliverables schedules for the bid. Challenge the information provided
  • MONITOR KEY RISKS - Risk tracking and management throughout the bid process

Design Management
  • DESIGN SCRUTINY - Technical review, challenge and verification of sub-consultants designs and assumptions on Design & Build contracts during bid & construction phases
  • MANAGEMENT Lead the geotechnical process for a project. Ensuring the designer delivers information in accordance with the agreed design programme and deliverables schedule. This will involve leading internal/external meetings and workshops ensuring actions are recorded and distributed
  • IDENTIFY VALUE ENGINEERING - Value Engineering review and identification of opportunities for D&B and significant Build only projects during bid & construction phases
  • TEMPORARY WORKS - Design and Review of temporary works for all companys projects
  • QA PROCEDURES - Review and Update Company Quality Assurance Procedures for Geotechnical related activities
  • DESIGN PROGRAMMES Production or/and checking of design programmes

What we are looking for

  • Minimum of BEng Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Demonstrable experience within a Civil Engineering environment
  • Expert knowledge of geotechnical engineering and experience in managing geotechnical engineering on large complex projects
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work accordingly
  • A positive approach with confidence to communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of people
  • Full UK driving license and own vehicle
  • CSCS card

  • Ideally a Chartered Professional with a relevant professional body (for example the ICE)
