The Transportation & Public Works Department (TPW) – Project Delivery Division (PDD) is seeking a full-time Graduate Engineer B or Engineer A or B to work on a wide range of Capital Improvement Projects from the 2016, 2018 and 2020 Mobility Bonds. Projects that will be working on are in the areas of Bikeways, Vision Zero/Safety, Safe Routes to School, Transit Enhancement, and other TPW Divisions projects.
TPW’s Project Delivery Division is responsible for leading and implementing projects from planning phase to construction. The Engineer will work with TPW Divisions to collaborate in the design of critical projects. A collaborative work culture with the other TPW Divisions is needed to achieve our goals, as well as a “getting it done” mentality.
The Project Delivery Division manages projects from divisions such as Vision Zero initiatives for intersection improvements, street illumination, and signalization improvements. Other projects include Shared-Use Paths, bicycle paths and lanes, transit stops and lanes, and sidewalks.
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in transportation infrastructure design such as roadway geometric design, bicycle and sidewalk infrastructure design, hydrology and hydraulic analysis, roadway grading and construction activities. Knowledgeable in Civil 3D or Microstation Geopak/OpenRoads.
The projects the ideal candidate will work on are intersection design and multi-modal infrastructure using the Transportation Criteria Manual (TCM) for Vision Zero Initiatives and other divisions at TPW. A good knowledge of AutoCAD or Microstation Geopak or OpenRoads is highly desirable. These types of projects will also need analysis of drainage facilities as it relates to positive drainage and impact to existing infrastructure. Knowledge in cost estimating of the proposed infrastructure from the design of the candidate or other from TPW.
This position will work under the Supervising Engineer with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment which include these primary responsibilities:
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge maintaining best-practice for roadways, transit, bikeway and pedestrian operations used by TPW, TxDOT, Capital Metro, and peer agencies. Knowledge of transportation planning, engineering practices, principles, modeling tools and cost estimates. Knowledge in developing schematics plots and proper deliverable plan sets that meet City of Austin CAD Design Standards or TxDOT Design Standards Superb written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with internal stakeholders. Some knowledge of local and state regulatory ordinances and laws. Experience working for a highly progressive transportation organization. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD), ArcGIS, and, MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access).
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate Engineer B
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in engineering.
Licenses or Certifications: Texas: Engineer – In Training Certification.
Engineer A
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of engineering experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
Engineer B
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus six (6) years of experience in engineering acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
Licenses or Certifications: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.
