The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in geotechnical engineering at Assistant Professor level. The anticipated starting date of the appointment is July 1, 2024.

Candidates from all areas of geotechnical engineering with crosscutting expertise in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply: effects of climate change on geosystems, resiliency of civil infrastructure systems across multiple geohazards, sensing technologies in geoengineering, biomediated and bioinspired geotechnical engineering, energy-related applications of geotechnical engineering and artificial intelligence/machine learning applications to geotechnical engineering.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field, have demonstrated evidence of research capability and ability to develop a vigorous, independent, externally funded research program, and maintain a strong publication record.  Candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, should be committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in the field through research and teaching, and would ideally be engaged in activities to promote it. Screening of applicants will begin December 15, 2023, and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ranks in the top 20 public civil engineering programs in the country according to the US News and World Report Rankings. In addition to the Maryland Transportation Institute (MTI), new centers and institutes that have been established include the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute (MEII), the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices (REFBDI), and the Quantum Technology Center (QTC). The innovation and entrepreneurship programs on campus recently brought the University to the top 10 in Entrepreneurship Magazine.

The University is located close to NSF, NIH, and other funding agencies, and has strong research ties with government research labs, corporations, and start-ups.
