This is an opportunity for a mechanical or structural FEA engineer with a maritime background to join the delivery team on a large high profile design project in the maritime defence sector.
You will be reporting to the Principal Engineer. This Senior Structural Engineer role will be responsible for the design and analysis of structural and non-structural metallic components, assemblies and castings from their initial concept through to final production. The Senior Structural engineer will be expected to work with other team members supporting the development of complex multi material assembly's including the design and analysis of bolted and bonded joints.The role:
The successful Senior Structural Engineer will have extensive experience in design of metallic structures using both forged and cast components, and have knowledge of the design of detailed features, holes, inserts and casting refinement. The Senior Structural Engineer will also have experience on performing static, dynamic and fatigue analysis of metallic structures and components.
The candidate should have a proven track record of delivering to time and budget on complex programmes and an ability to work independently and critically review their own work.Day-to-day, you will be:
To provide effective leadership and coordination of the engineering and technical activities to deliver programmes of work. Act as a Principal Engineer, combining subject matter expertise and sound engineering judgement to solve problems. Breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work. Work with the Project Management community to task and control work conducted by technical teams. Manage the project/programme to undertake the work within the agreed quality, timescale and budget.Through example, demonstrate the expected QinetiQ values and behaviours.Use your skills and knowledge to develop the capabilities in the areas you are working in. Mentor others to improve the knowledge of your areas of expertise within the wider engineering and technical communities.Internal Collaboration. Actively participate and encourage increased collaboration across the Group and wider technical teams. Work with other functions (e.g. Technical Excellence; Safety Engineering) to deliver the technical programme of work such that it complies with statutory, regulatory, company, business and project specific processes and procedures.External Collaboration. Use opportunities with partner organisations and other parties to identify and then develop joint technical approaches and methods to expand our combined offering so that we can deliver greater value to our customers. This will include supporting the Business Development and Sales strategy. Give technical presentations and talk knowledgably about the work conducted in external forums, including conferences and in customer meetings. Safety. Ensure projects/programmes you are responsible for are conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices and providing potential options to reduce the risk so that it is as low as responsibly practicable.Ensure that Governance is applied consistently across the technical programmes where you are involved. Act as a peer or independent reviewer for other projects or programmes of work where suitable.
As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be able to work on a Hybrid working model if this is what you prefer. You will also have flexibility around working hours.Essential experience of the Senior Structural Engineer:

Qualifications for the Senior Structural Engineer:
- Finite Element Analysis of structures and systems
- Experience of metallic materials, design and manufacturing
- Experience of design and analysis of metallic structures
- Experience of analytical analysis of metallic structures and failure
- Knowledge of different metallic manufacturing techniques
- Proficient in FEA software ideally Abaqus
- Proficient in CAD software
