The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seek applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the field of resilient pavement systems and smart materials. The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE), one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant transportation and pavement engineering research community (learn more at, comprising a group of faculty members who are leaders in the design and analysis of sustainable and resilient pavement infrastructure, and characterization and modeling of pavement systems. 

Candidates will have a Ph.D. in civil engineering, or a closely related field, with research and scholarly focus on one or more of the following topic areas:  

  • Mechanistic Design and Analysis of Pavements: Analysis and design of concrete and asphalt pavement systems using advanced numerical tools and constitutive models.  
  • Advanced Materials Characterization and Model Development: Use of conventional and advanced testing methods for characterization and constitutive model development for concrete and asphalt pavement technologies.  
  • Sustainability Assessment of Pavement Systems: Holistic sustainability assessment of material choices, design types and construction practices using lifecycle assessment and lifecycle cost analysis.  
  • Carbon Neutrality: Developing novel and alternative paving materials and practices that can contribute to decarbonization of the transportation construction industry. 
  • Advanced Data Analytics: Application of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and machine learning techniques to pavement performance assessment and prediction.  
  • Climate Resiliency: Assessing the vulnerability of pavement infrastructure to climate extremes and developing strategies and guidance on the design, planning and construction stages to build resiliency into pavement networks.  

Candidates will be expected to support the ABET accredited Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering curricula and enhance the capacity of existing centers and initiatives including the National Center of Excellence on Smart Innovations (, Southwest Pavement Technology Consortium (, and the Arizona Pavement Materials Conference ( Situated in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, ASU offers prospective faculty members enormous opportunities to test and evaluate advanced pavement engineering technologies and solutions.  

As part of its New American University imperatives, ASU seeks candidates whose research aligns with addressing critical infrastructure grand challenges, assessing impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure, and developing sustainable technologies to advance global health, wellbeing, and resilient communities. We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of in-person and online graduate and undergraduate courses, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research projects and undertake service activities. Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner is desirable. 

Successful candidates will support the mission of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and are expected to participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching endeavors both within and beyond the Fulton Schools. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Fulton Schools, the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment is currently the most involved in the interest areas of the search. The School offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Civil, Environmental, Sustainable, and Construction Engineering, and in Construction Management and Technology.  SSEBE has 60 faculty members, 1450 undergraduate and 750 graduate students, and generates annual research expenditures of nearly $30 million per year.

Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. The anticipated start date is August 2024, but accommodations can be made for the selected candidate. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field 
  • Research and scholarly focus on pavement systems and materials engineering 
  • Demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank 
  • Demonstrated evidence of ability to procure sponsored research and generate scholarly articles in the interest areas of the search, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner 
  • For associate and full professor candidates: 
  • Demonstrated record of securing external funding for research programs 
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning
