Ideally situated just 20 miles southwest of Kansas City and part of its 2.2 million-resident metropolitan area, the City of Olathe has set itself apart as one of the Midwest’s dominant business, economic, and cultural centers. The community incorporated in 1857, taking its name from the Shawnee Indian word for “beautiful,” and more than 150 years later, its 152,584 residents enjoy a high quality of life with excellent connectivity throughout the region, a nationally recognized school system, and one of the best-educated workforces in the nation. Notably, 93% of residents consider Olathe a great place to live, a testament to the city’s commitment to providing a thriving and desirable environment for its inhabitants.

Olathe’s Infrastructure Department contributes to building, managing, and operating the heart of the community and helps build the quality of life that Olatheans have come to enjoy and expect. Core services include Water and Sewer, Solid Waste, Transportation, Street Preservation, Street Maintenance, Utility Maintenance, Stormwater, Parks Construction/Infrastructure, Inspections, Facilities, and Fleet Management. Under the direction of the City Engineer, the Assistant City Engineer assists in the planning, management, and supervision of the activities and operations of the City’s engineering division, including construction inspection, transportation planning, and traffic engineering, operations, and asset maintenance in the areas of signal coordination, streetlights, traffic design, development review, pavement markings, signs, and traffic studies.

The City of Olathe is seeking a skilled and strategic professional who will drive innovation and support the community’s short- and long-term vision for safety and connectivity. Candidates should have strong technical knowledge; a comprehensive understanding of relevant property, drainage, and land use law as well as public infrastructure, floodplain, and construction management best practices; and experience developing long-range plans for robust infrastructure and maintenance programs, including funding methods and grant opportunities. They should also know how to analyze data and prepare reports, contracts, and presentations; align departmental goals with organizational objectives; and work closely with City officials, diverse colleagues, contractors, consultants, and residents.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, transportation/traffic, or a related field. Candidates should also have at least five years of experience in civil engineering, traffic engineering, or a related field, including at least one year of administrative or supervisory experience. The selected candidate must possess or be able to obtain their Kansas Professional Engineer’s license within six months of hire. A Kansas driver’s license is also required. Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
