The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the associate professor level in the area of offshore foundation systems.

The faculty hire is to focus on developing and optimizing innovative foundation systems for offshore wind and marine renewable energy systems, improving methods for analyzing sediment-structure interaction and subsurface effects on foundation performance, mooring systems for renewable wind/wave/current energy systems, improved designs for anchored and floating foundation/anchorage systems and optimizing models for operational and extreme loading.

Expertise in geotechnical engineering and sediment-fluid-structure interaction is sought. Responsibilities for the position include establishing a robust externally-funded research program, pursuing high-impact scholarly research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the civil engineering curricula, advising and guiding students, and becoming engaged in outreach and professional activities.

This search is in response to Stony Brook University's commitment to develop solutions in response to the harmful effects of climate change. Stony Brook University has recently embarked in large strategic initiatives to strengthen its mission to develop solutions in response to the harmful effects of climate change. Stony Brook University is the anchor institution for the New York Climate Exchange, a first-of-its-kind international center being developed at NY's Governors Island for developing and deploying dynamic solutions to our global climate crisis, while also acting as a hub for New Yorkers to benefit from the new green economy. The faculty-driven initiative "Collaborative for the Earth" is a multi-disciplinary "action-tank" that seeks to develop solutions in response to the harmful effects of climate change and in abatement of existential risks to the living world's interconnected life-supporting systems. There are some 20 faculty engaged in offshore wind and related research, from basic science, to engineering, to environmental impacts. Some faculty expertise related to the search area includes wind-farm modeling, geosystems, computational science for fluid-structure interaction, power grids, ocean currents, and waves, impact on marine life, and climate modeling

Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) in civil engineering or a closely related field. A well-established record of external research funding as a principal investigator. A strong record of scholarly publications. Potential for securing externally supported research, particularly at the federal level. Demonstrated excellence in teaching in an environment similar to SBU. Evidence of notable research contributions as demonstrated by research papers and/or awards.

Preferred Qualifications:

Industry experience related to the candidate's field of expertise. A Professional Engineer's license. Ability to create synergy with the existing expertise in the Department of Civil Engineering. Ability to conduct intra- and multidisciplinary research.

Department Description: The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook was established in 2012 and is now one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The department currently consists of 10 tenure-system faculty members, with approximately 185 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. Faculty in civil engineering department are engaged in diverse research, mostly grouped in the following areas: coastal and hydraulic engineering, computational engineering mechanics, data analytics and smart cities, structural mechanics, geosystems engineering, and water quality. The department recently developed a number of key state-of-the-art research facilities, including an 85-ft integrated wave and current flume facility, and a super-computing cluster with over 1,200 cores and 70 TB data storage. A properly equipped geotechnical engineering laboratory is also available.

As one of the only two comprehensive (Bachelors to Ph.D.) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York, the Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University is playing a key role in addressing critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is a partner of the New York State (NYS) Center for Clean Water Technology, the NYS Infrastructure, Transportation, and Security Center, and the Atlantic Marine Energy Center. Faculty also have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERT), and the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation. Collaborative opportunities also exist with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, both of which are less than 30 miles from campus.
