In this role you will oversee the delegation of work assignments, determining priorities, supervising plan production, and monitoring progress of deliverables. As a people leader you will manage your staff’s daily operations, professional development and growth, and performance measures with a mindset focused on our five core values: Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.

This position allows for a flexible schedule Monday through Friday, with requirement to report to the Central Complex, located in Ames, Iowa. Travel for inspection, conference, and workshops may be required.

This position requires candidates to possess an Iowa Engineering License.  In our efforts to help support our employees, maintaining an Iowa Engineer License through meeting continued education requirements for this role, the Iowa Department of Transportation is proud to be a partner with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Through this partnership, DOT engineers are granted membership at a largely discounted price, as well as discounts for conferences and continuing education through the ASCE.
As the Bridge Final Design unit leader, Transportation Engineer Manager (TEM) your daily responsibilities will include:

    • Providing technical engineering assistance to subordinate professional engineers in the design of detailed contract plans for construction of all types of highway structures from simple to complex.
    • Making or directing inspections and write reports containing recommendations and cost estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.
    • Supervising and reviewing plans that are submitted by outside sources for approval.
    • Providing support to the Construction and Materials Bureau and the District Offices for timely solutions to construction problems involving structural concepts.
    • Reviewing and making recommendations to improve current bridge policy and procedures based on new design and construction specifications and feedback from the Construction and Materials Bureau.
The best candidate for this role will have a passion for bridge design, interested in using it to analyze different challenges and identify successful solutions. We’re looking for someone who embraces and encourages a culture of change through their leadership of innovation and new ideas. You’ll need excellent communication skills to work with all levels of management, your team, and a variety of parties to ensure effective and efficient success for the bridge design team and the agency as a whole. We are excited to find someone who will bring their positivity, motivation, and determination to this team!
