Who are we?

The Mineral Products Association (MPA) is the trade association for aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, industrial sands, dimension stone, lime and mortar producers. It has a membership of around 150 producer companies and 225 associated companies, representing around 90% of the mineral products sector. It is the sectoral voice for mineral products throughout the UK. MPA represents the interests of its members with all levels of Government, regulators, external audiences and other organisations both in the UK and Overseas. MPA membership is made up of the vast majority of independent SME quarrying companies throughout the UK, as well as all of the major international and global companies within the sector. MPA employs directly around 45 employees supporting the organisation and its members. The industry supplies some £22 billion worth of materials and services to the economy each year.

The Role

We are seeking a Structural Engineer who is passionate about driving the growth of the concrete market in construction projects. This role involves equipping and enabling members of the design and construction supply chain with expert technical and commercial knowledge to promote the use of concrete over competing materials.

Please note: This role is based in the London office and may also require the individual to work from other MPA offices or alternative locations on occasion.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • To provide expert technical support and advice to specifiers on concrete construction in Structural Engineering.
  • To assist in the use of concrete and masonry concepts in buildings by producing technical design guides, software programs, promotional brochures and technical brochures; by lecturing at seminars, lectures and at exhibitions; by preparing press or technical articles, etc.
  • To develop and maintain contacts with construction industry supply chain members in these sectors and to use personal knowledge and experience of the use of concrete and masonry in construction to put the case for concrete and masonry and favourably influence the choice of concrete construction products.
  • To reactively respond to enquiries from construction supply chain members for specialist advice on buildings.
  • To provide expert technical help to specifiers on concrete and masonry construction through the National Helpline as and when appropriate.
  • To prepare and deliver technical presentations and webinars to specifiers, to a high level of competence, on the use of concrete and masonry in building construction.
  • To liaise with other MPA staff as well as other external bodies (e.g. The Concrete Society, BRE, etc.) to ensure that enquiries from construction supply chain members for specialist advice are followed up and effectively dealt with.
  • To represent the concrete sector on technical committees, Codes & Standards Committees and working groups to improve the design, education, marketing and technical aspects of concrete and masonry.
  • To drive forward innovation in concrete structural engineering.
  • To have an input as appropriate into the work of relevant "partner" organisations.
  • To be an active member of, and preferably play a leading role in, an Institution or Association related to construction.
  • To assess threats and opportunities and assist in the development of new products and services to take advantage of such opportunities and/or counter the threats.
  • To provide input to other tasks being carried out by the Structural Engineering and/or Architecture, Housing & Sustainability and Marketing Departments.
  • To carry out any other such tasks as from time to time will be required by the line manager.


Competence Requirements

The following knowledge, skills and experience are required for this role:
  • Must be a Chartered Engineer or close to achieving Chartered status.
  • Active participation in IStructE/ICE is necessary.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in the UK construction industry with a focus on design and construction using concrete and other materials.
  • Experience working in a commercial environment is essential.
  • Ability to prepare and confidently deliver technical presentations to large audiences of construction industry professionals.
  • Capable of representing the concrete sector on national and international committees.
  • Ability to identify threats to and opportunities for the sector.
